Is it Illegal to scan a College Textbook and give it to other students?

One person in my class took the time to scan the whole textbook for a class then someone told him that it might be Illegal to actually give other students the PDF of the book, so I am wondering if that is actually illegal.

Book copyright doesn't allow for creating a digital copy. Strictly speaking he broke the copyright when he scanned it in.

It is illegal but no body would probably take him to court because he did not charge for it. The major legal problem is that some students in the class did not buy it because they got a free copy. Yes, it's illegal. You're denying the royalties to the publisher and the authors. IF someone found out,

both the student and the school that allowed it to happen could b sued.
Yes, that's a copyright violation, like putting music you bought online for anyone to get for free.
