What is the difference between an international version and a regular version of a textbook?

I recently bought the Pearson Organic Chemistry textbook. but when i got it i noticed that it said that it was the international edition of the book. i was wondering what the difference between the regular edition and the international edition was.What is the difference between an international version and a regular version of a textbook?
The only difference is the registration requirements for exportation and customs, like cigarettes, for example, that are produced equally but packaged differently according to the intended destination. I would assume that these products are being registered for many different reasons, primarily for tax and customs.
