How to I get over my fear of certain pictures in my biology textbook?

This is going to sound ridiculous, but I am SERIOUSLY SCARED of snakes and spiders pictures in my textbook. I obviously have to read my textbook because I have a test on some chapters, but there's a page with like five pictures of snakes, I flipped to it once and FREAKED OUT. I threw the book and had chills... I really need help...How to I get over my fear of certain pictures in my biology textbook?
I honestly think it would help you if you would just force yourself to look at it. The more you look at the pictures the less freaked out you will become because you become more desensitized to them. When you start your anxiety level will probably be a 10, but you'll probably find that the longer you look, it'll go down. It'll be uncomfortable at first, but that's what they do with OCD patients that have an outrageous fear of certain things like that and it seems to work.
Tape some paper over the pictures or get some way to cover them without damaging the book, and you should be able to read it without getting freaked out. Works for me, yes I feel the same about some things lol, except I get afraid of the old people in my book liike einstein, he's creepy looking, lol.How to I get over my fear of certain pictures in my biology textbook?

How to find my textbook that I lost months ago?

So I have to find my stupid math textbook, and if I do not I will have to buy a new one. It costs about $220 and I really don't want to pay that.... I lost it like six months ago and I have searched everywhere in my house and backpack and at school..... I'm frustrated and really tired of looking for it!

So where is a place that it might be?How to find my textbook that I lost months ago?
I would maybe consider about going to http://www.bigwords.com and just buy or rent it again. They search all the online textbook retailers and rental sites, which is how they're able to save you so much money. I've been using this site for years and it's been awesome, so I'd suggest this. How to find my textbook that I lost months ago?

Can you return a 6th grade textbook that you bought from Amazon back?

My dad bought me 2 textbooks to use at home, a history and a science textbook (the same from my school). He wants to know if we can return the books back to Amazon or not.Can you return a 6th grade textbook that you bought from Amazon back?
You probably can, but if you used them, or had them for an extended amount of time, they'll probably just offer you a buy back price, which isn't very much. You can also put them up for sale on Amazon and maybe get a little more for them that way.Can you return a 6th grade textbook that you bought from Amazon back?
I would just sell your book. Try using http://www.bigwords.com they'll get you top dollar for your books. It always does for me. I even went to my campus bookstore and remember they were only going to give me $17 for a book that cost me $157. I was able to sell that very same book on bigwords.com for $53. Big difference. It's deff worth looking into.

If you have a textbook it's most likely designed for a class, or has an explanation written in it. DON'T use only a textbook for learning French- it'll only teach you basic polite conversational phrases you'd only use in set situations such as "It's lovely weather out, isn't it?" and "Do you have spinach?" So...yeah. You need to learn the REAL language, not textbook language. There's a big difference.

How does the instructor know I am not cheating if the answers are in the textbook?

Let鈥檚 say for an example, my assignment is to read a chapter and answer the questions in my textbook and if my textbook I am working on that has the answers in it all the way in the back, anybody could cheat and write the answers without knowing what it is. Like the student may look at the back of the textbook at the answer key.

So how does the instructor really know that you knew the answer and didn鈥檛 cheat looking at the answer key if you do a homework assignment and answer the questions? How does the instructor know I am not cheating if the answers are in the textbook?
If the answer to the question is a written sentence or paragraph, simply copying the paragraph from the book is plagiarism. If it's a math or science question, simply knowing the answer isn't enough - you need to be able to show the work as well.
Most instructors ask you to show your work. For example, if it's math, you'll need to show how you got to the answer. Many times, having the answer helps you figure out how to solve the problem.

I'm not aware of many other subjects other than math that have the answers in the back.

Plus, the instructor will know if your answer is word for word to the book answer.

Otherwise, if you show up for the test and do poorly, then the instructor will know you didn't actually work to figure out the answers.

The funny thing is, if you actually do homework the right way, you don't even have to study for a test. How does the instructor know I am not cheating if the answers are in the textbook?
most courses are graded heavely on tests so if you cheat on hw more power to ya but you still have to do good on the test. most text books also only have some answers not all. kinda a way to look and see if you are on the right track for the hw assignment. and math text books have answers but most teachers want you to show the work. just make sure if you are looking in the back of the book to always make sure you actually understand what you are reading.
Well you know how the textbook sometimes gets the answers "wrong"

They didn't really get it wrong. This is done on purpose .. so the teacher could say ..who got this question right ( one with the answer "wrong" at the back of the book.

Cheater A puts his hand up and says he did.

BAM teacher 1.. Cheater NoneHow does the instructor know I am not cheating if the answers are in the textbook?
If your answers are worded exactly like the ones in the back, it will look a bit suspicious, to say the least. If it's, say, math, you may be required to show how you got your answer.

In any event, even if it's something like multiple choice where they really can't tell at all, you're not going to learn a thing by copying the answers out of the back. If all of your homework is the kind you can check in the back of the book, chances are, you just get a few points for doing it, maybe 20% of your grade at most. Cheating on your homework may save you some time, but it won't save your grade because the exams are worth more. The point of homework, generally speaking, is to give you the chance to test your own knowledge as a way of learning (think of each assignment as a practice test), not forced labor. It's much more effective to keep up with the work, to do the problems on your own and check your answers (and learn from your mistakes by going back and working through them again) than to do nothing all semester and try to cram at the end.

Does anyone have a suggestions on a good botany textbook?

I am a senior biology major looking for a text book on botany. No botany classes are offered at my college so I am looking for a supplementary textbook to read to get a basic background. Any suggestions from other college courses or PhDs?Does anyone have a suggestions on a good botany textbook?
If you're looking for an overview of plants, particularly systematics, evolution, taxonomy, and comparative anatomy/physiology (i.e. traditional "botany"), then Raven's Biology of Plants is a standard.

A nice non-text that I have is "A Photographic Atlas for the Botany Laboratory" (Van de Graaf, Rushforth, Crawley).

Taiz and Zeiger's Plant Physiology is a great text for plant physiology.

FYI, you can save yourself some money by buying old, used editions. I doubt much has changed, especially for Raven; Plant Physiology probably has more value in getting an updated version.Does anyone have a suggestions on a good botany textbook?

The only difference is the registration requirements for exportation and customs, like cigarettes, for example, that are produced equally but packaged differently according to the intended destination. I would assume that these products are being registered for many different reasons, primarily for tax and customs.

Where can I get a cheap high school textbook?

I really like a textbook from my grade 12 physics class called "Nelson Physics 12", ISBN 0176259880. I want to buy it for less than Nelson's advertised price of $155 + shipping. Since the school issues these books to us, I'd imagine it's rare that someone would sell one and I couldn't find any on eBay or some other major used items sites. Any suggestions?Where can I get a cheap high school textbook?
See if your high school will sell you one (and how much they'd want for it). Maybe even try asking if they have a damaged copy that they'd be willing to sell to you at a discount. They probably got it cheaper than the list price since they buy in volume.

You said you checked eBay and such. Try Craigslist ( www.craigslist.com ) or Amazon or Barnes %26amp; Noble or a general search online. Don't forget to look under their "used books" options.

Try searching on some homeschooling sale groups (that sell used homeschooling curriculum) online.

Ask your physics teacher. Sometimes teachers are given copies by the publisher. You never know if he has a copy that he doesn't need laying around--or knows of someone else who has one.

What is a good introductory but informative Astronomy textbook?

What textbook would you recommend and what are you using? What is a good introductory but informative Astronomy textbook?
It's been a long time since I've read introductory astronomy textbooks, but let me make one suggestion:

Alex Filippenko is an astronomy professor at UC Berkeley, and he has an excellent reputation as a teacher. If his book is as good as his teaching style, it should be very good. The only problem is that it's expensive -- $120, with used copies available starting at $69 on Amazon. It's designed for non-science majors, and has excellent reviews on Amazon.

    The book is

The Cosmos: Astronomy in the New Millennium

by Jay M. Pasachoff and Alex Filippenko

    -- added later:

I just checked Amazon. The paperback edition is a little cheaper ($108), but used paperbacks are available for just a few dollars.

    -- added later:

Here's a nice review of three astronomy texts:

    http://ephemeris.sjaa.net/0408/c.html

Of course, the best textbook for you depends on your level of mathematical knowledge, and how much time you want to invest. Books for non-science majors (like Filippenko's) have a minimum of mathematics. The book mentioned by Eri (Carroll and Ostlie) might be great for someone with a couple of years of college math and physics, but unsuitable for someone without that background; it's also a much longer book than the three reviewed in the above web site.
In my graduate courses, I have found Carroll and Ostlie's Introduction to Modern Astrophysics very informative. What is a good introductory but informative Astronomy textbook?
my vote is for "foundations of astronomy" by michael seeds. it's in it's 9th edition i believe. i used the 4th edition in college. it teaches history and the math of astronomy. it has great graphics to help visualize principles as well. $138 new, $48 used, amazon.

"Introductory Astronomy and Astrophysics," by Smith, Jacobs, and Zeilik. I used to have a copy of the 1973 edition of this book, and it was pretty good. I just now did a search for the title, and DAMN would you look at that price! Textbooks are way overpriced these days (the most money the flunking scare will bear). Get a used copy if you can.

  • Is it true that every tenured university professor has published a textbook?

cause I typed my professors' names on a textbook search and they didn't come up.

I thought in order to get tenured, they are required to publish a textbook? Is it true that every tenured university professor has published a textbook?
No, that's not true. If that were the case, every single professor would be using the textbook they wrote, and there would be millions of textbooks out there in every field - that's not necessary or feasible. To become tenured at most colleges and definitely all universities, they expect professors to have published - but journal articles, not books. Very few will publish books, and actually articles are more highly regarded even if they take less time to write and publish because they present original work (not just rehashing the field) and are peer-reviewed. I'm sure if you looked up journal articles by your professors in their field, you'd get a lot more hits.Is it true that every tenured university professor has published a textbook?
No. Most tenured professors have done something research related which may be published but few write books.

Best place to learn how to ride is on a Motorcycle Safety Course. You cannot get the feel of a motorcycle's handling and proper contron from a book. As far as the other things you want to know, the DMV for your state probably has a booklet, and there are definitely books that help you map out parking lot courses to practice on, show proper body posture while riding, etc. Start with the library--Most motorcycle textbooks are brand and model-specific, especially the ones explaining the mechanics, exploded views of the engine, etc. When it comes to learning to ride, the basics are the same whether sport or cruiser. It's all fun--get your nose out of the books and DO IT : %26gt; DIs there anywhere where I could find a textbook about motorcycles?
Get Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough. It would be a much detailed follow up to your safety course. A good book about the mechanical aspect would be Sportbike Performance Handbook by Kevin Cameron. If you want to go faster read Total Control by Lee Park or Twist of the Wrist by Keith Code. All of these books I got from the library. Also look in the Transportation section at the book store to preview these and more. Get the Hough book because it will be great for you. Good luck.
As far as riding and roadracing....Keith Code, follow the link. These books for road racers and sport riders details the process of high speed thought. Hundreds of questions aimed at solving the barriers of speed allow you to dissect your riding and pinpoint problem areas.

  • Funds spent on students in education and textbook teaching?

In some schools, students have more money spent on them than in other schools. Why? How do you propose that we can fix this problem?

And plenty of teachers teach from the textbook, or just having their students memorize things. What are the downfalls of this? Funds spent on students in education and textbook teaching?
School funding is tied to property taxes. A rich community = rich schools. The only to do away with this is to demand the rich to give to the poor. And since the rich always vote and the poor don't = nothing will change. Not that it should. Taxes are a *****. An extra $200 a month on my mortgage payment. Would I pay an extra 25$ a month so a poor school district has more money: no. And I teach in the poorest school district in western KS!

As far as rote and drill teaching, it works for "smart kids" who are expected to do good in school by parents (i.e. well to do communities). The thing is, many kids have yet to buy into school. For this section of students, education is just a spectator sport. They have to be reeled in by relevant lessons and a variety of instructional practices.

Funds spent on students in education and textbook teaching?
I'll address the second question first. There are two types of content areas: concept based and skills based. English and math are skills based. In english you are learning skills to apply to any text and in math you are using skills to do problems with any number set. Science and history are more concept based. higher level science will then be more skill based. Same with history. In higher level history courses, you analyze primary texts and create a thesis as to the reasons things happened.

However, students need a base of knowledge for history and science. This knowledge is often memorized, but it is a key understanding the bigger picture. If a kid doesn't understand chemicals work a certain way, what is the point of figuring out the math of the reactions?

To answer the money question, you can't. We do not have the ability to change this. It would be like saying people should be able to choose how the government spends money on the military. The decision makers are (we hope) the people who know what is best. As a teacher, I don't believe this about my state board. but as a teacher, I am more concerned about how the state board is screwing up the curriculum and making us step back in time.Unfortunately, people who are more politicians than educators make decisions.

What does international edition mean on a textbook?

I need to buy a textbook called Adolescence; 12th edition by John W. Santrock. The International edition seems to be significantly cheaper. What is the difference between that book and the U.S. ed if there is one. The International edition is in english but is there a huge difference? What does international edition mean on a textbook?
If it's international edition, that means that it was originally published for international use (e. g. India). The content is exactly the same as the US edition, but the publishers just found ways to cut corners to make publishing it cheaper so that it's affordable for people in those countries. Usually they are in paperback, but they are still good quality textbooks. I have bought several international editions of books and found them to be the same as the US equivalents. • Is it Illegal to scan a College Textbook and give it to other students?

One person in my class took the time to scan the whole textbook for a class then someone told him that it might be Illegal to actually give other students the PDF of the book, so I am wondering if that is actually illegal.

    Only answer if you know.

    King County, Washington

Thank you.Is it Illegal to scan a College Textbook and give it to other students?
Book copyright doesn't allow for creating a digital copy. Strictly speaking he broke the copyright when he scanned it in.

I am not a fan of the law but what can you do when Disney is allowed to write all the rules on copyright. Is it Illegal to scan a College Textbook and give it to other students?
It is illegal but no body would probably take him to court because he did not charge for it. The major legal problem is that some students in the class did not buy it because they got a free copy. If he did it very often there would be legal problems if the publisher found out about it.Is it Illegal to scan a College Textbook and give it to other students?
Yes, it's illegal. You're denying the royalties to the publisher and the authors. IF someone found out,

both the student and the school that allowed it to happen could b sued.
Yes, that's a copyright violation, like putting music you bought online for anyone to get for free.

Can I sell a textbook with a corner cut off by the publisher?

I know how to sell textbooks on Amazon. I just want to know if I can sell a textbook with the a corber cut off by the publisher to prevent resale. I think it meant resale by other companies but can i do it as a student just selling his used book? Can I sell a textbook with a corner cut off by the publisher?
yes you canCan I sell a textbook with a corner cut off by the publisher?
Yes you can...You just have to state the condition of the textbook when you post it on Amazon, or anywhere else you decide to post.

But, in case you still are a student you might want to look into TbookXchange.com, and instead exchange them for other textbooks. I recently signed up for http://www.TbookXchange.com which seems like a relatively new free textbook exchange service. All I had to do was create an account, add the books I needed to my need list, the old textbooks to my have list, and if there are any possible exchanges, (which unfortunately does not happen every time, yet), It helps me to save some extra money from not needing to buy a new text book. If it does not work out for you this time, it might do so next time, who knows??? I have to say that I have worked up quite a collection on old text books from many of my previous years, since I am a senior right now. I do wish this website would have started a bit sooner...

Hope this gives you another option that might work out for you...Good luck with whatever you decide on doing...Can I sell a textbook with a corner cut off by the publisher?
Yeah go check out http://www.bigwords.com they'll find you the most you can get for your book. Even though your book has that corner cut off it'll still search for all the online textbook resellers. From using it for so long, I can say that you'll deff get a decent amount for your book. Good luck!

Are there two definitions of atheism; a textbook definition and what society perceives?

There are lots of words like this in the English language; irony is a great example. I think atheism is like this too, don鈥檛 you? I mean, we all know the textbook definition of atheism; one who believes in no higher power(s). But there is also how society perceives atheism and that is people who are rational, pragmatic, cold hearted, analytical etc, right? To qualify as an atheist, shouldn鈥檛 one have to pass both definitions? Are there two definitions of atheism; a textbook definition and what society perceives?
Nop, I go with the definition from a dictionary. I don't care what society says
If there is a definition which society perceives that is any different to the real one it would be in thinking that atheism is always of the strong form.

There's no need to make the definition of atheism any less inclusive than the current generally accepted weak definition of "a person who lacks a belief in a god or gods".Are there two definitions of atheism; a textbook definition and what society perceives?
There are so many things wrong with this statement, I'm not sure where to begin.

To answer your question in the most direct and brief manner, without giving myself a headache - No. To qualify as an atheist, one should not have to pass a) an actual 'definition' and b) your warped sense of what you perceive an atheist to be. Your bias against atheists does not qualify as a definition by any means.
The problem is that society consists largely of people who are not atheists. Suppose a predominantly Christian society defined a Jew as "someone who is going to Hell for refusing to recognize Jesus as his savior". You can certainly redefine a word to the point that it is no longer useful, but then you'd just need another word for what atheists mean when they self-identify as "atheist".Are there two definitions of atheism; a textbook definition and what society perceives?
A dictionary definition is "Without God"

    A biblical definition is, without Christ, without hope, without God;

Eph 2:12 That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and WITHOUT GOD in the world:
The word Atheist simply means "one who actively disbelieves in the existence of a supernatural god or gods" that is all

if we don't stick with the agreed upon definition for words then communication no longer works, words actually mean something, learn what that is before you use them. your probably one of those people who use "conversate" and "irregardless" too
Sure, but then what would be the point? We dont hand out certificates.

Edit: For all those who say go by the dictionary: Society dictates the definition of words.

Where do you think definitions come from? God?
I disagree with your societal perception of Atheism.

I don't know of a single person who believes an Atheist to be the kind of person you describe.
No because only one definition is correct, the one in the dictionary. What some people mistakenly call irony isn't another definition of irony, it's just incorrect.
Society's view is that being an atheist means you believe in nothing and you are immoral, but this is nihilism, a completely different thing
No. Your second defintion is your definition. It is not mine. Atheists are those who have no interest in magicl fairies. Period.
They can pass wind for all I care...I start anew job tomorrow I'm going to be a dozer hand again...I think I'll take a lunch in case the roach coach don't go to that site
No. Society's perception can be changed, and does so frequently. It's a terrible criteria to go by.
I think it is along the lines of educated perception of the word and christian perception
What I wanna know is how "society" gets these united ideas in the first place
A lot of words are like that ... theory being perhaps the most abused ...

What textbook does BOCES use for their LPN program?

Im looking at attending the LPN program, but I am not able to right now because of my family situation. I would like to get a jump start and just read the textbook on my own. What textbook does BOCES use for their LPN program?
I finished a nursing program, as this is where my passion lays. However, I encourage everyone to look into a better field. Nursing has no shortage and there are literally NO jobs. I am in NYC and know BSN nurses who have been out of work for almost a year. When you DO find a job, 9 times out of 10, it will be abusive. Nurses have to deal with an incredible amount of stress, harassment, bullying, and degradation.

This is coming straight from the nurses mouth. If you have any level of self-respect, you will absolutely regret your decision to go into nursing. The suffering is tremendous and most nurses have conditioned themselves to accept the abuse. They are in flat out denial and will viciously defend their career. I am humble enough to say that I LOVE helping my patients, don't mind the dirty work, but I actually have a self esteem and realize that, in this field, human beings are treated well below their worth and it's not natural, nor healthy.

Here are a few fields that I have personally researched and very few people are aware of them. They are currently stable and will BOOM incredibly in the next few years as we have about 60,000,000 baby boomers retiring:

    - Occupational Therapy Assistant...go for your COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant)- average salary $50,000-$65,000/year to start.

-Physical Therapy Assistant- average salary $40,000-55,000/year...but they are needed a little more than COTAs because most people do not want to go to school for PTA. It's a little more difficult of a program and you usually don't go back for your Bachelors. You would make this your career. It has a HIGH rate of job satisfaction, though.

-Health Information Technologies- $50,000-$100,000/year (depending on how large your facility is and what state it's in). Ask yourself, HOW many people do you know that specialize in this? That's right, probably NONE. Why? It's a newer major that was created as health care expands/grows and systems are being updated. Being a computer major will not be enough. Hospitals and Health Care institutions have elaborate billing/coding/medical systems that are updated CONSTANTLY and they need someone who has the specific knowledge to handle them.

-Health Care Administration- $40,000-$85,000/year. This is the person that RUNS the show, per se. They have a vast knowledge of codes, laws, policies, and some payroll and human resource experience. They are the go-to people when there are questions to be asked...they are the jack of all trades. Desk job= LESS harassment, stress, bullying. But don't be fooled, you will have to put in effort and actually know your stuff...very rewarding once you do.

-Diagnostic Sonographer- $35,000-$75,000 This person is trained to look for cancerous masses, cysts, etc. Very rewarding career, works alongside doctor and saves that doctor a DRASTIC amount of money.

I'm just saying..keep your options open. You don't have to go into Health Care..you can do whatever you want! :) Have a great day and feel free to message me if you would like!

Hello Itraneey, both would fall at the same time as they fall in vacuum. This is similar to Galileo's experiment or Newton's experiment. If they get dropped from a height S then time taken to reach the bottom would be t = ./2S/g

As t does not depend on any mass or area of the object both would take the same time for falling. But if they get dropped in air, then due to buoyancy force and friction etc both would arrive at different time. Book would arrive so early than the slow landing paper.

cut the bag into a rectangle, wrap around front and back of book, tape it, then fold the tops and bottoms into the front and back covers of the book and tape again
dont think there is any way to do that without cutting it apart and taping back together
Cut the bag so that the handles are on the front and back like you want them to be. then trim the top or bottom so that it doesn't over hang so much. Tape and it should be how you want it. I am not sure that the handles will hold up through the stress of the school year though. You might have to re-enforce the handles with tape.
the website below has a step by step process.

thank-you very much for re-using your paper bags and not wasting money and resources by buying a stretchy plastic cover. After all, you already killed the tree, why not use it to its fullest?
Ohhh! use a razor or exacto knife, when u open it up, there is a little white paper, where in school, you would write your name and year. cut the top part of the white, disconnecting it from the text book. Use like a hot glue gun. and glue it back on, with the front part of the bag connected. Do the same to the back. C= It will look more professional. C=

What type of citation would be used to cite sources in a textbook?

I'm proofreading my dad's chapter that he's writing for a textbook called "Pharmacy Management" and I'm proofing the citations at the end. Apparently he has no idea what style of citation they're supposed to use and neither do I since all I know and use is MLA style. What style would be used in this situation? What type of citation would be used to cite sources in a textbook?
Scientific citation is ALA for Social Work. ... KK found this In scientific writing, we don't cite references by using footnotes. Instead, citations including author's last name and year are inserted directly into the text, like this (Kusnick, 1997). If there is more than one author, the citation might look like this (Kusnick and Waterstraat, 1996) or like this (Kusnick and others, 1995). If you use a reference more than once, you just insert the citation again (Kusnick, 1997). If you reference several authors in the same sentence, you can list them alphabetically within the same citation (Kusnick, 1997; Waterstraat, 1996). If an author has more than one citation in a single year, label them a, b,c, etc. after the year (Kusnick, 1997a). If you use someone else's stuff for a whole paragraph, cite them once in the first sentence and again at the end of the paragraph. If you include a direct quote, put it in quotes and include the page number in the citation (Kusnick, 1997a, p. 37). Be sure to insert a citation anytime you reference factual material or someone else's opinion. It is better to have too many citations than too few (which can be plagiarism).

What is a good arabic textbook for middle school students?

Hello! Im using my sons account and this fall I am starting an arabic course for 8th grade and 9th grade students. I am good at speaking Arabic but was wondering if anyone knew of a good textbook that could be used for the students. ThanksWhat is a good arabic textbook for middle school students?
The Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya series with DVDs is probably the best for MSA and can be purchased on Amazon.com. There is a supplemental book in the series called Alif Baa, which is for learning the script.

There are other textbooks that are geared towards younger students so you should check Amazon, just search "Arabic textbook". But the problem is some of them don't have reviews. Al-Kitaab is the one used mostly in college courses and probably the most thorough and trusted. You should look through it at a college bookstore and see if you think it would be suitable for students that age.

This depends on your college bookstore. My college bookstore does buy them back, but you can probably get more money if you sold it to a classmate at your school. It will be hard to sell these books online as they are made especially for your school (the ISBN will likely turn up no hits).

You can indeed buy used custom-edition from most college book stores If not, you can also buy them from other students to save money. You may have to buy the code separately online to do the HW, but you almost always end up saving money this way.

What is the best textbook for studying Quantum Mechanics?

MIT uses 7 different textbooks for Quantum Mechanics II, III, but Rutgers uses one textbook for Quantum Mechanics II. Why is that? Does every Quantum Mechanics textbook have a different approach, different mathematical maturity level? What is the best textbook for studying Quantum Mechanics?
You're right -- there are different textbooks that have different emphases (quantum mechanics is a big field) depending on the background of the author, and the texts have different approaches, different formalisms, and involve different levels of mathematics.

Here are a few books I look at. For atomic theory and spectroscopy (including Zeeman and Stark effects), I go to Cohen-Tannoudji/Diu/Laloe (Quantum Mechanics) or Landau and Lifshitz (Quantum Mechanics). For angular momentum theory I go to Baym (Lectures on Quantum Mechanics), Shankar (Principles of Quantum Mechanics), Cohen-Tannoudji/Diu/Laloe, or Merzbacher (Quantum Mechanics). For perturbation theory, I go to Baym or Cohen-Tannoudji/Diu/Laloe. For scattering theory and semiclassical methods, I go to Branden and Joachain (Introduction to Quantum Mechanics) or Merzbacher. For the two-slit experiment, I go to Feynman (Feynman Lectures on Physics Volume III). For path integrals, I go to Feynman, Shankar, or Merzbacher. For Dirac notation, I go to Chester (Primer of Quantum Mechanics), Feynman, or Shankar. There are many other books, of course -- these are just ones I happened across in my studies (perhaps ten years ago).

It's hard to recommend one "good" text, given the variety in material and approach. It depends on your interests and background. Brandsen and Joachain isn't bad for undergraduates. I find the notation in Landau and Lifshitz and in Merzbacher to be hard to penetrate for some reason (maybe also Baym). Cohen-Tannoudji/Diu/Laloe is a good general text, but more at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level (as are many of the books I mentioned, actually). What is the best textbook for studying Quantum Mechanics?
My friend if you have wikipedia , you don't require a bokk but if you still need one than check out

The Principles of Quantum Mechanics by Dirac , it is more then hand full

How to tell my parents I lost a really expensive massive textbook?

I lost a textbook and can't think of where I put it. Now I need to buy it, and its like 70 bucks. My parents will make me pay, but I never spend money and i am afraid that my parents will be ashamed of me. How do I tell them? How to tell my parents I lost a really expensive massive textbook?
I am sure they will understand. It is only a book and everyone losses this it happens. Come clean sooner rather than later. Good luckHow to tell my parents I lost a really expensive massive textbook?
try to tell the truth, be honest. it'll be hard if you practice not telling the truth especially to your parents, it might be the cause of their distrust to you..

Is it okay to email a professor to ask about what textbook I need?

I've never met her before, and nobody knows what the textbook is yet, but I want to learn in time to buy it off the web.Is it okay to email a professor to ask about what textbook I need?
Absolutely. People do it all the time. Also, it might make the professor remember you as a conscientious student who wants to prepare ahead of time.

The only way this could backfire is if you say that you need to know so that you can buy it cheap and then it turns out that your professor is using a book she wrote. And even then she can't really hold it against you.
As long as the professor has her email address publicly available to her students or students at the university, then it is perfectly acceptable for students to get in contact with her through those means. That's why her and other professors email addresses are posted on course syllabuses and university program websites in the first place. Is it okay to email a professor to ask about what textbook I need?
It is perfectly ok to send an email and ask (being summer, it may take a little while to hear back, though). Any time a student emails me in advance to ask anything about my course I look forward to meeting him or her when the class starts. Just be warned, though, the professor may not know the book yet (courses get changed up semester to semester to keep things interesting) or she may be waiting for a book to become available from a publisher.
Totally. The professor will like the fact you want to be prepared. Just make sure when you e-mail the professor it's a very well done e-mail, so she gets a good impression.

Hope this helps! Is it okay to email a professor to ask about what textbook I need?
yes, most professors don't mind being emailed at all, but don't expect a hasty reply, they are busy people.
Absolutely it's okay. In fact it's a great idea.
Absolutely...in fact they will notice you in class and probably like you aggressiveness.
As long as you keep it professional.
Absolutely. Having the right text book will save you lots of hassle once class starts.
    Yes.
    Yes.
Sure why not. There is no harm in that.
Yes it's fine. It certainly wouldn't be a bad idea
of course, I do it all the time
yes.. thats not wrong.. but if u can met him jUst met it
    sure why not
don't think that would be a problem trying to be prepared!

Is it easier for you to learn a concept from a textbook, rather than the teacher's abridged notes?

Chemistry: enthalpy change. I could not understand it with the teacher's lesson, or watching someone else do it. I went back to read the lesson in the textbook (which is much wordier), and I understand it fully. Is it easier for you to learn a concept from a textbook, rather than the teacher's abridged notes?
I'd rather learn it from a textbook. When I study I write out a summary of the entire course for exams. I find it more effective than notes. ;/

  • Where can I find worksheets to supplement my Saxon Algebra 1 textbook?

I picked this textbook up very cheaply but I don't want to have to go out and buy the homeschool guide. I was wondering if anyone knows a website or resources that have supplements to use with the Saxon Algebra 1 (and 2) curriculum?Where can I find worksheets to supplement my Saxon Algebra 1 textbook?
You don't need any supplements. There are 30 problems for each lesson, there isn't any need for more worksheets. 1/2 of the answers are in the back of the book so you can make sure they are correct.

Saxon is very straight forward, and easy to follow. However, if you do want the problem guide, try amazon. They have lots of used books and it should be inexpensive.

How can I convince my parents to buy me a math textbook?

I already have a math tutor but they are going to be like "Why do you want a math textbook when you already have a math tutor?"

Oh gosh. What should I say? I really want to learn more since I am going into grade 11 and marks count. How can I convince my parents to buy me a math textbook?
If hey are good parents they will be happy to buy you a math text book (assuming they are not really poor). Sk them very nicely and the should be very happy that you want to learn. If they cannot afford it or do not want to buy you one, can you try joining a library and borrowing one.

You can also use Google to find website with course material to help you. Good luck. How can I convince my parents to buy me a math textbook?
Just Ask Them.. Never sneak.. When ever i need that is about studying i ask my parents and they give me. just ask your parents................How can I convince my parents to buy me a math textbook?
I agree that you shouldn't sneak, but if your parents are paying for a math tutor, they should be willing to buy a textbook. Do some research on ebay or Amazon; you might be able to find a used copy for a fraction of what a new one costs.
Tell them you just want a used one and they are not expensive compared to the kind of money you will make from learning it. Most parents would jump for joy at that request!

Is it possible to read 900 pages of Campbell Biology textbook in 2 months ?

My friend is now initiating his reading on Campbell Biology textbook. He's already read 250 pages and still got 900 pages. He want my advice on how to divide time to read from now until Feb, 2010. Help guys !Is it possible to read 900 pages of Campbell Biology textbook in 2 months ?
    2 months = 60 days = 15 pages a day.

That's not only possible, but expected for most serious college students. Is it possible to read 900 pages of Campbell Biology textbook in 2 months ?
Hi whether his aim is to read the book completely or read and understand the concept in book. if he already know the basic principle of biology then he can easily finish the book just like reading a novel. But he is new to biology then it is very difficult to complete the book. it is not counted how many pages he finish but only what he understand counts....Is it possible to read 900 pages of Campbell Biology textbook in 2 months ?
It should be pretty easy to read at least 20 pages / day, which would let him get through the rest of the book in 45 days, well short of two months.

Why does my biology textbook sound like a fairytale?

It goes into great detail about everything that happens during cell division to the point where it becomes hard to believe. How do they know all of these things. When someone becomes a biology professor, are they given 'proof' or first hand experience of what is described in the text like a math professor would learn proofs? Or do they just memorize the text? BTW, I am not talking about looking through a compound microscope to identify spindles.

Basically, is the undergraduate biology textbook the highest source of explaining biology? Or is there greater detail than that, somewhere else. Why does my biology textbook sound like a fairytale?
An undergrad biology textbook is certainly not the highest level. There are many textbooks out there that go into much greater detail that are used at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. I've always seen "Molecular Biology of the Cell" as the gold standard. I agree that it all sounds kind of crazy when you're just memorizing the facts, too. A lot of upper-level courses go into the details of exactly how these discoveries were made, though it also depends on your professors (better professors will go into more detail and will encourage you to question things). You can also find lots of information in regular books.

So much of science is built up on previous work that it's impractical to go into every single previous discovery in detail, or to go back and verify everything firsthand. If an aspiring chemist had to go back and re-construct the periodic table from scratch, then rediscover the makeup of an atom, re-invent quantum theory, etc, he'd have to retire before he ever got to do any new research of his own. It's a fine line that professors have to walk, maximizing the amount of information that you learn, but also teaching you how that information was discovered in the first place. In the end, you have to place some trust in the scientific consensus, unless there's an actual reason to doubt a prior conclusion (which happens from time to time). Why does my biology textbook sound like a fairytale?
The biology textbook will not go into the methods used to discover these things. I'm pretty sure you can look up the methods used to discover things like cell division. They were mostly indirect observations and you will need to know much more about chemistry and physics to understand the relationship between the data and conclusions.

Also, many of what we know about biology are collections of observations over hundreds of years from many scientists. Why does my biology textbook sound like a fairytale?
This is such a great point! I feel the same way when I learn about Anatomy %26amp; Physiology. It's amazing how much we know, and how much we are just supposed to 'believe' as undergraduate students.

Most of the time when I ask about things like these my proffs say that there is a LOT more that goes into these processes and if I continue my education in that specific field I'll learn about it.

Crazy right? It's like why does someone need to know all this? (but it is fascinating I must say)

How can you tell when a new edition of a textbook is coming out soon?

I know that bookstores have a way of checking with the publisher to see when a new edition of a textbook is due to come out in the near future.

How many months in advance can this be determined?

Are there any resources I can use to figure this stuff out myself so I don't have to call the bookstores and ask?

Thanks. How can you tell when a new edition of a textbook is coming out soon?
Usually you can check the new edition information in Amazon.com by searching the same book title.

In the search result list, search by Publication Date.

If the book name is not too common and if it has a new edition, it will come up in the first few result. You can click in and check further information to see it's the book you find.

The information sometimes appear 3 months before, sometimes a month before the new edition on sale.

Another method to guess if a new edition will come out is to check out the buyback stores. e.g. booksintocash, bookbyte, booksvalue. How can you tell when a new edition of a textbook is coming out soon?
You can pretty much assume that there's ALWAYS a new edition in the works. Textbooks are probably the most outrageously overpriced item in a student's budget, besides tuition itself. New editions are there to screw the students who have the old edition out of making back some of the small fortune they had to shell out for a new copy. They're also a good way of ensuring that royalties keep flowing into professors' pockets - if students are buying and selling used books, how would the professors who demand the latest editions make any money?

How much do different textbook editions typically differ?

I need the 10th edition of a particular textbook for one of my classes. I ordered it, but it was lost in shipment, and my money was refunded because the book was out of stock. So I checked out the 9th edition from my school's library as a temporary substitute. But so far I have been pleasantly surprised with how well it goes along with the homework we've been assigned...so, should I buy the right edition, or could I probably get by with the older one and save some dough? How much do different textbook editions typically differ?
Ask your teacher. I have a teacher who said that we need the twelf edition of a specific book but saw a student with the 11th and said that if we already purchased the 11th, than it should be fine. The higher the edition, the more updates it has. So ask your teacher, he or she would be the one who would honestly know. How much do different textbook editions typically differ?
They're usually pretty similar especially since your editions are so close I think for the most part you'll be ok. However, my experience is that sometimes content on different page numbers change because of the new revisions they've made so be careful about that.

How is the pay for the author of a University textbook?

    Hello,

I realize authors obtain a royalty out of each book sold, but my question within a question is how many copies are sold on average (per year) for a good quality University textbook in say, Engineering? Does anyone know how many copies typically sell, and how much the royalties are for some publishers? I can't find any lists or references on the subject. How is the pay for the author of a University textbook?
Most university textbooks are written by university professors that have to publish or perish. Their main income is their teaching job. They probably only make a few thousand for the textbook and probably only a few thousand of the textbooks are sold.

Have you bought older editions of a Textbook required for a college course?

If so, did it really make a difference?

I wouldn't buy a different-edition of a math book (since the class would take homework questions straight from the book), but I don't see the difference in an 8th and a 9th edition of a Biology textbook.

Have you bought older editions of a textbook?

Did it end up mattering?Have you bought older editions of a Textbook required for a college course?
    It didnt matter at all.

It helps to ask the teacher what edition He or she uses. Many teachers do not use the newest edition of the textbook on sale, and base thier syllabus/homework on the edition THEY use personally.

For instance, My calculus teacher used the third edition or a textbook ( I bought on amazon for 1.73) but was telling us about the textbook sold in the campus bookstore. She used the 3rd edition , so I bought that and it made no difference.

Even better, you can use inter-library-loan at your school to order the book for afew weeks.

Where is a good place to sell a used college textbook?

My daughter barely used the textbook it is new condition, if we sell it to the college bookstore they will only give us about half of the purchase price. I would like more than that for it. I know I will probably not get what I paid for it but would like to get the majority of it.

Where is a good place to sell it?

This is from a dual credit high school/ college course and we don't know anyone else taking the course soon.Where is a good place to sell a used college textbook?
There are a couple of options.

-If there is an independent textbook store around, they might give you more.

-Some universities have a textbook swap or sale program - see if yours does this.

-You could put up a notice on campus to see if someone taking the course in the fall would like to buy the book

-You could post it on ebay, amazon, or someplace like that.
the bookstore is the best bet.Where is a good place to sell a used college textbook?
Craigslist or put fliers around your school, Student bookstore, etc.
Try http://www.bigwords.com They are a textbook search engine that searches all the online retailers and rental sites to find you cheap prices but you can also use them in reverse to search for resellers that want to buy your books.

Hope this was of help.Where is a good place to sell a used college textbook?
I sell all of my text books on amazon, but it is unlikely that you will recover more than half of your costs. Here is how to do it:

1.) Type your ISBN number into a search engine like Google first. You will find several online book sellers who already have copies of your book posted. I recommend Amazon, because I prefer the seller support they offer. With an ISBN number Amazon will show you how much the book is selling new and used. If if is a popular book, you can expect to get the median price for yours. If it is not a popular book, expect to charge less than the cheapest few books available. The fact that it is in excellent condition might beat out a few poor copies, but you need to remember that people go there to get a bargain. They'll by a book without a covers if that means saving a few bucks.

2.) Go to your school bookstore, local independent stores etc to see how much they will give you. Even if they give you slightly less than an online dealer, take it if it's close. Selling online adds additional costs (commissions, shipping fees, etc.)

3.) Since it is close to the beginning of the semester, try to post a flier first, but save your money and post it primarily near the classrooms, or in the departments associated with your book.

Unfortunately, the likelihood that you can hope to get back much more than your bookstore is offering are slim. 50% of the purchase price for a used book is pretty good. Our bookstore usually only returns about 11 - 30 %

What to tell your principal if someone has stolen your textbook?

Ok so here is the deal. I had my mathbook with me the other day. Between the time I left it in my locker and the next day, it was gone. I have checked every possible place and I think someone stolen it. How do I tell my principal someone has taken my textbook. Oh and I also had my book I was reading which was also stolen. What to tell your principal if someone has stolen your textbook?
Don't say "stolen." Be diplomatic. Say that you left it in your locker (mention if you locked it and if anyone has the combination) and that the next day it was "missing." That way you anticipate the principal's questions, answer them before they are asked, and don't make any accusations. The principal can come to his or her own conclusions as to what happened.
tell him/her "Principal i think someone stole my math textbook " then keep on questioning and answering as you chat with the principal and he/she will tell you to be more responsible and might give you a new one but as he/her is questioning you have to think before you act or else it will take a quite a long time or you mistake something that you mean to say . Like one time our teacher was giving us a very easy one (1+1)and i mistake it with multiplying and i say 1 and i got embarrassed and got joke around. So beside the adding part don't be worry about talking to the principal he/she is not go to hit you or something else he'll/she'll understand. What to tell your principal if someone has stolen your textbook?
Tell the principal exactly what you just wrote in your question.

Make sure you tell him/her that you are a responsible student and it is not normal for your stuff to go missing.

Try to use big words and speak well haha.

And, just be honest. There isn't much you can do about this except just tell your principal.

If you aren't comfortable going to your principal then try going to a cool teacher that you are comfortable with first...

    Good luck!

    I hope I helped.

    :)
Unless you can prove with solid evidence WHO stole your books, your most likely going to be charged for the books at the end of the year. Sorry to be debbie downer, but being in college, if I lose my book for what ever reason, I would be **** out of luck! and they can be pricey too...watch your possessions a little closer..What to tell your principal if someone has stolen your textbook?
simply tell the principal that you lost your textbook and if he can help you find it.if you think you know who took them, check with them first
i wud think u wud tell him/her pretty much what u said here.

    ?????

What would someone do with a stolen textbook?

I forgot one of my textbooks outside on my high school campus, I went outside during class to go obtain it and it was gone.

Now I'm wondering what someone would do with the stolen textbook. They haven't returned it to the office and I don't know how they could try to make money off of it (it says property of ___ on it)What would someone do with a stolen textbook?
That person might give it in student reception or lost property. check everywhere. If u lose it then, u will have to pay for a new textbook. They can sell it to someone. What would someone do with a stolen textbook?
Cover your name and use it or try to sell it to a used book shop maybe. What would someone do with a stolen textbook?
Many people buy and sell used textbooks every year. Or maybe the person has a younger sibling who can't afford the textbook. You can't say it was stolen if you abandoned it outside. The person who found it was not a thief. Your carelessness does not entitle you to cast aspersions on others.

Other theories: they had carelessly lost theirs, just as you did, and were glad of a replacement. Or if you were absent-minded enough to leave it outside, maybe you forgot where you left it and it is still there. Or it was found by someone who dislikes you enough to relish getting you in trouble by hiding your book.
resell it after getting rid of your name on it... or use it if they lost their own one

How were your organic chemistry class and textbook?

I'm hoping to teach, and write a textbook, and I'd love to do both in new ways. What stuff in your organic textbook was completely useless? What was really confusing? Just give any opinion you got. Best Answer will go to the most insightful. How were your organic chemistry class and textbook?
Just an opinion, but let us say you found something that was really insightful. I'd argue that it would have to be different in how it is taught. Now the challenge becomes, who would use it?

I have had the chance to look at a number of textbooks. I think a legitimate question you might ask is whether teaching reaction mechanisms ought to be a priority? Books that are organized by reaction mechanism (which I favor) are in the minority. I believe that reaction mechanisms in and of themselves are insightful. I am surprised and dismayed to find as many professors that have abandoned some of the books that use that methodology.

Although I did not have the statistical strength of the larger schools and classes, I was surprised to find that my median students were about five percentile points higher on the ACS organic exam with a mechanism based text than a functional group based text. Students that know reactions mechanisms will do better on that exam than those that do not. (A mechanism is a rational description of how the electrons move in leading to a final product, again, an insightful method.)

I believe I had in some small ways succeeded in creating an innovative organic workbook. I would like to write a textbook, but that would be a pretty tall order. Using my book, I was able to raise my class average on the ACS organic chemistry exam by twenty percentile points. You may learn more about it here: "The Language of Organic Chemistry; A Guide to Organic Chemistry Mechanisms" at http://www.curvedarrowpress.com.How were your organic chemistry class and textbook?
well! teaching chemistry is not something which can be learned just by observation. u have to get practically involved in the teaching process. use your own chemistry teacher's teaching styles to develop ur own containing the positive aspects of those all.

Writing organic chemistry book in a NEW WAY is again a painstaking task. u have to go through all the available books, notes etc to do so.

I didnt find any USELESS stuff in my organic chemistry book. Its not just the book which teaches chemistry. its the TEACHER who clarifies the concepts in the minds of students and prepares them in such a way that they do not fully depend upon one specific book.

A good teacher makes his students understand the basic concepts and also develop in them a habit of thinking and solving (not copying) the assignments and work sheets assigned to them as their class work or homework.

Its just the same thing as when you see someone swimming its looks easy and you can comment on that too. But once you yourself jump into the waters then you really know the inner situation (of water as well as of your body and mind).

Its easier said than done so start working and it really helps to sit in the lectures of different senior chemistry teachers. Best of luck.

What is the best way to manage or bind a loose leaf textbook?

I managed to accidentally get a loose leaf textbook rather than a hardcover. The textbook cannot be returned. I am wondering if anyone has experience with these and could recommend the best way to manage or bind the loose leaf book. I have put it in a 3 ring binder, but it doesn't seem to be very functional, it is difficult to turn the pages, pages feel like they could/will rip out VERY easily, etc. Just seems like there has to be a better way! Thanks in advance for any advice! :)What is the best way to manage or bind a loose leaf textbook?
Go to Staples, Office Depot (or Wegman's LOL), and buy adhesive reinforcements. These are little plastic or fabric circles on wax paper that you peel off and put over the holes of the three-ring punched sheets. They keep pages from tearing out.

Failing that, take the pages to Staples and ask them to bind them. Staples has a machine that will punch 15 or 20 holes on the side and thread a plastic binder through the whole thing. They charge a few dollars. What is the best way to manage or bind a loose leaf textbook?
A binder is the best way. If the pages are difficult to turn, get a bigger one. I've had to deal with these a few times and the binders were the only things that worked at all.

Thank you.How do I open a book store for college textbook?
No, you would have to get the lists from the professors who assign the books. However, now that there are dozens of good on-line sites, the likelihood that you could be profitable with such a bookstore is small.

How do I use an MLA citation for a textbook with multiple authors?

Would it just be the title of the textbook then the page number in parenthesis? Also when refering to a book in MLA format, do you put it in quotes or underline it?How do I use an MLA citation for a textbook with multiple authors?
    Ahh...complicated.

    Use easybib.com

    You'll love it =)

Oh and tell all your friends about it!How do I use an MLA citation for a textbook with multiple authors?
First, you always italicize the titles of books -- you can't see the italics in the following, but they are there:

    " MLA Format: Multiple Authors

When more than one person has authored a text, typical bibliography entries will appear as follows:

The authors' names should be given as they are on the title page of the text, in the order they appear (which will NOT always be alphabetical). If two authors share the same last name, each author's full name should still appear. If the names of editors, translators or compilers appear on the title pages, then a comma come should come after the last name to appear in the entry and the proper abbreviation (eds., trans., or comps.) should follow the comma. In the entry, the first author's name should be reversed, followed by a comma, and then each additional author's name in its normal order. If MORE THAN three persons authored the book, only the first name (reversed) should appear, followed by a comma and "et al.""

  • What is a good way to remember from the textbook?

My exams are coming and I have loads of things to remember from my Chemistry and Biology textbook. How can I do it? Write out? What is a good way to remember from the textbook?
write important points on a paper, then organize them with the first letter in the point (or what the important part is) then make a word of it. then you gotta remember one word and reference what ur notes are from that one word

Whats the best way to study biology from a textbook?

This biology class is so much. i have to read three chapters for a test. first chapter is 30 pages and the other 2 chapters are 40 pages each. and trust me the textbook is nott small!!

any tips of how to study for this test?

thankyou!Whats the best way to study biology from a textbook?
take notes while you read. and read your notes over and over. biology is just a lot of memorization. good luck.

My human biology textbook says it may even be possible for humans and chimpanzees to interbreed. Is this true?

The relationship between humans and chimps is remarkably close, nearly identical in terms of DNA, so according to my textbook, some biologists believe it's possible to interbeed, though they would produce sterile offspring. Is it possible, and if so, why has nobody artificially inseminated chimpanzees to find out?My human biology textbook says it may even be possible for humans and chimpanzees to interbreed. Is this true?
Offspring fertility is not the criterion for species differentiation. A number of species can crossbreed and produce fertile hybrids - best known ones are probably the various birds that do it (especially among the ducks). Species determination is a fairly arbitrary decision based more on reproductive isolation than offspring qualities.

Anyway, about this idea of crossbreeding - maybe it would work, maybe it wouldn't. Degree of DNA similarity is suggestive, but not conclusive, since there may be critical areas of difference among those small variations. As to why nobody has tried: that's a sort of squirm-inducing idea, and I suspect that most of us aren't too crazy about looking into it much. Anyway, would it tell you very much that was interesting, new and useful? I don't know.
They say that species can't interbreed, but horses and donkeys make mules and someone mentioned the Ligers. Also, early man ie homo sapiens and Neanderthals have mated and produced our ancestors (at least in one theory) and they were of different species. My human biology textbook says it may even be possible for humans and chimpanzees to interbreed. Is this true?
The Humanzee (also known as the Chuman, or Manpanzee) is a hypothetical chimpanzee/human hybrid. Chimpanzees and humans are very closely related (95% of their DNA sequence, and 99% of coding DNA sequences in common [1]), leading to contested speculation that a hybrid is possible, though no specimen has ever been confirmed.

    [edit] Etymology

In spite of the usual convention of portmanteau words to describe hybrids, there is no consensus as to which word to use, "chuman" or "humanzee" in popular speech. Geneticists adhere to the portmanteau word convention to indicate which species is the sire.[citation needed] (cf. tigon/liger) This is important because of the phenomenon of genomic imprinting where genes are expressed differently depending on which parent contributed them. Hybrids are named according to the convention first part of sire's name + second part of dam's name (except where the result is unwieldy). For geneticists, "Chuman" therefore refers to a hybrid of male chimpanzee and female human, while "Humanzee" or "manpanzee" refers to a hybrid of male human and female chimpanzee.

    [edit] Feasibility

Humans have one chromosome fewer than other apes, since the ape chromosomes 2p and 2q have fused into a large chromosome (which contains remnants of the centromere and telomeres of the ancestral 2p and 2q) in humans [2]. Having different numbers of chromosomes is not an absolute barrier to hybridization. Similar mismatches are relatively common in existing species, a phenomenon known as chromosomal polymorphism.

The genetic structure of all the great apes, including humans, is similar. Chromosomes 6, 13, 19, 21, 22, and X are structurally the same in all great apes. 3, 11, 14, 15, 18, and 20 match between gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans. Chimps and humans match on 1, 2p, 2q, 5, 7 - 10, 12, 16, and Y as well. Some older references will include Y as a match between gorillas, chimps, and humans, but chimpanzees (including bonobos) and humans have recently been found to share a large transposition from chromosome 1 to Y that is not found in any other ape.[3]

This level of chromosomal similarity is roughly equivalent to that found in equines. Interfertility of horses and donkeys is common, although sterility of the offspring (mules) is nearly universal. Similar complexities and prevalent sterility pertain to horse-zebra hybrids, or zorses, whose chromosomal disparity is very wide, with horses typically having 32 chromosomes and zebras possessing between 44 and 62 depending upon species. In a direct parallel to the chimp-human case, the Przewalski horse (Equus przewalskii) with 33 chromosome pairs, and the domestic horse (E. caballus) with 32 chromosome pairs, have been found to be interfertile, and produce semi-fertile offspring, where male hybrids can breed with female domestic horses.[4]).

In the 1920s the Soviet biologist Ilya Ivanovich Ivanov carried out a series of experiments to create a human/ape hybrid. At first working with human sperm and chimpanzee females, none of his attempts created a pregnancy. In 1929 he organized a set of experiments involving ape sperm and human volunteers, but was delayed by the death of his last orangutan. The next year he fell under political criticism from the Soviet government and was sentenced to exile in the Kazakh SSR during the Great Purge; he died two years later (see below).

As far back as 1977, researcher J. Michael Bedford[5] discovered that human sperm could penetrate the protective outer membranes of a gibbon egg. Among the apes, the gibbon is the farthest from humans. Bedford's paper also stated that human spermatozoa would not even attach to the zona surface of sub-hominoid primate (baboon, rhesus monkey, squirrel monkey), concluding that although the specificity of human spermatozoa is not confined to man alone, it probably is restricted to the Hominoidea.

In 2006, research suggested that after the last common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees diverged into two distinct lineages, inter-lineage sex was still sufficiently common that it produced fertile hybrids for around 1.2 million years after the initial split.[6]

However, despite speculation, no case of a human-chimpanzee cross has ever been confirmed to exist in modern times.

    [edit] The Ivanov experiments

In 1924, while working at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, Ivanov obtained permission from the Institute's directors to use its experimental primate station in Kindia, French Guinea, for such an experiment. Ivanov attempted to gain backing for his project from the Soviet government.

Ivanov reached Conakry in November 1926 accompanied by his son, also named Ilya, who would assist him in his experiments. Ivanov supervised the capture of adult chimpanzees in the interior of the colony, which were brought to Conakry and kept in cages in the botanical gardens. On February 28, 1927, Ivanov artificially inseminated two female chimpanzees with human sperm (not his own or his son's). On June 25, he injected a third chimpanzee with human sperm. The Ivanovs left Africa in July with thirteen chimps, including the three used in his experiments. They already knew before leaving that the first two chimpanzees had failed to become pregnant. The third died in France, and was also found not to have been pregnant. The remaining chimps were sent to a new primate station at Sukhumi.

    [edit] Rumored humanzees

There have been occasional reports and rumors of humanzees throughout history. St. Peter Damian, in his 11th century De bono religiosi status et variorum animatium tropologia, tells of a Count Gulielmus whose pet ape became his wife's lover. One day the ape became "mad with jealousy" on seeing the count lying with his wife and it fatally attacked him. Damian claims he was told about this incident by Pope Alexander II and shown a creature named "Maimo", which was supposed to be the offspring of the countess and the ape. It has been mentioned that Maimo was most likely a retarded human child.
Speaking from experiance, I've had no luck what-so-ever in getting my chimp pregnant. Maybe it's my sperm count......My human biology textbook says it may even be possible for humans and chimpanzees to interbreed. Is this true?
No thats not possible. two different species can not breed.
I'm not sure. Now, we have here the potential to find out that chimps and humans are actually the same species. If you can produce a chimp-human hybrid, that doesn't necessarily mean that chimps and humans are the same species. (You're right, as we understand it, a chimp-human hybrid would be sterile.) However, if a chimp-human hybrid proved to be fertile, then chimps and humans would be the same species.

Since Ligers/Tigons (can't remember which) proved to be fertile, Tigers and Lions are the same species so Tigons/Ligers aren't hybrids.

    True hybrids are barren.
Humans have 46 chromosomes and Chimps have 48. This would make it almost impossible to produce progeny.

    c-ya
As you say, some do but more dont. If you're really so interested, why don't you volunteer to be a sperm donor in the experiment?
Stalinist Russia did a few experiments that were unsuccessful. Just because something is possible, doesn't make it worth doing. The ethical implications far outweigh any knowledge that would be gained.
False. Throw away your textbook. It sucks.
Which textbook is that? I would like to see exactly what it says. I majored in Evolutionary Anthropology and never read anything like that. You have to be careful about 'some biologists.' Apparently 'some biologists' believe evolution isn't real.
    Yes my father-in-law did
I don't think so!! Monkeys and us are two completely different things. Even though we have some things in common, it's doesn't mean we came from them or that we can produce something from 'interbreeding' with them. It's like saying an apple cat and dog are similar because they have fur, four legs, ears, and tails. But it doesn't mean they can make little pupcats. They are totally different. Same with us and monkeys.
why dont you go find out
