How do you read a mathematical textbook?

If I were to start a textbook on my own for reading elementary algebra, how would I go about doing it?

What tools should I have to learn on my own? What are some techniques to reading a mathematical textbook to grasp the concepts better? Should I be drawing pictures as I read to help visualize?

What are some "hold your hand" books on mathematics that aren't complex that even someone with an average High School education can grasp. How do you read a mathematical textbook?
I'm in college and I'm still trying to figure out how these darn contraptions work (no joke)

But start from the beginning, work through the steps. Also keep your mind open, they like to put in things without fully explaining why so you kind of have to come about the purpose yourself.

Sorry I'm not much more help. How do you read a mathematical textbook?
First, buy "how to read books" for dummies, i'd recommend one that comes with a cassette tape as the turning page action is clearly your issue.

Once the text book is obtained, follow the prior instructions and continue to cascade down the page looking at those tricking things called words and diagrams. Remember once you reach the end you should use your thumb and forefinger to slighly up turn the corner of the page and turn it, generally to the left side.

I hope this helps.
