I need to spend time studying a heavy textbook and cannot sit at a desk or recline in bed without some pain. I am trying to figure out a way to read while lying down on my back in a completely flat position. This position is the most comfortable for longer stretches of time. However, lifting a heavy textbook with about 800 pages will take their toll on your arms and hands, however and I can't think of a viable practical way to keep holding the textbook about 12-18 inches from my face without pain. I've tried to tie the book with rope to the underside of my desk and lie underneath it. The book dangles above my head, but the book's pages need to be turned too. I am always in danger of having the book fall on my face if I move it. What do other people with neck, shoulder, arm and hand pain do to read?Is there a good way to read a heavy textbook when you have carpal tunnel?
I have the same problem but not b/c of carpal tunnel, just lazy... I have tried an overhead projector (cheap @ surplus stores) next to the bed and project on the wall in front of me but still requires movement to turn page....also tried a mirror on a approx 45deg angle to horizontal facing away from your eyes on little kick stand on each side of book and a second smaller mirror facing both your eyes and the first mirror attachet to the first mirror just above and back from it to correct the image's orientation.....lay the book flat on your stomach and place the mirror assem. so that the side kick stands straddle the book....the pages are not obstructed which make for easy turning of pages. you obviously need a rectangular mirror slighly wider than the text book for the main mirror. I eventually found a plastic mirror, thin, light, but still clear optically....it works great if you dont have too big a beer belly, %26amp; lots of time to fabricate the brackets etc. hope this helps.... e-mail me if you want a crude drawing. Suck it up and quit bitching. Is there a good way to read a heavy textbook when you have carpal tunnel?
They make book stands that u can put on a flat surface and all u have to do is turn the pages. My mom got one for the dinner table. Also good for computer desks office etc.
pain medicine.. . lol i don't know what to tell you hun.. get a book stand and lay on your side..Is there a good way to read a heavy textbook when you have carpal tunnel?
Wear your wrist splints (get some if you don't have any) and that will take the pressure off the nerve that is being compressed.
You are making this way too complicated. Use a desk/table for books that big instead of lying down. Laaaaazy.
1. Get some wrist braces especially for carpal tunnel. Have your doctor prescribe them. Your insurance should pay for them.
2. Put a pillow on your tummy when lying on your back to hold the book in place using the pillow as a prop.
3. Consider surgery. It is outpatient and you won't regret it. I have had both wrist done.
Sorry, but I think that you will have to sit up some. prop yourself up with pillows so that you are comfortable and at about a 65 degree angle, then prop the book up at an angle so you can see it on your lap (use a pillow or something soft) other than that you can buy a projector like the professors use and project the image of the page on the ceiling but that might be too expensive and you would have to reach over to turn the pages.
