How do colleges benefit from textbook rental programs?

I have to do a persuasive speech in college and I am doing it on how my school should provide a textbook rental program. One of the factors I am discussing is how it saves the college money and my teacher wants some financial facts with charts or graphs but I am having a hard time finding this. Anyone know where I can find some good information for my speech? How do colleges benefit from textbook rental programs?
The answer to this question is not as simple as it seems. There are many different ways for a school to run a textbook rental program, and there are differing cost and profit implications for each different model. Some schools run them on their own while others partner with book companies called wholesalers to help manage the program. Others still partner with online companies like BookRenter or Chegg to offer a program to their students. In general, the store would make more money if they could sell you a new or used textbook, but to remain competitive, schools have to keep up with options that are available to any student online.

The overall impact of textbook rental is to reduce the cost paid by the student to access a textbook. If you think about the typical cycle of buying a book and then selling it back at the end of the semester - it's really just a rental where the student bears the risk. I work directly with schools to set up textbook rental programs, and the overwhelming majority of schools are not asking how they can make more money, they are asking how they can better serve their students. How do colleges benefit from textbook rental programs?
It doesn't really save the college money, it might make them a little more. They can make more money by renting a book several times than they can by selling it once. But textbooks are generally always a profit-maker for colleges.

What is a good textbook to improve, technique, accurasy, and speed for right hand classical guitar?

My right hand technique is far inferior and slow to be able to play pieces such as recuerdos de alhambra or flight of the bumblebee and playing different strings is very uncomfortable for me.

Thank You in advance. What is a good textbook to improve, technique, accurasy, and speed for right hand classical guitar?
Sorry to the previous answerer, but while Noad is worth looking at, he is hardly the Guru you want to refer to. Instead, get Aaron Shearer's Learning the Classic Guitar, parts one and two, and study this text slowly! With a qualified teacher. Me, if you're in NE Ohio.

  • How different are the 7th and 6th edition of Early Transcendentals textbook by James Steward?

I am trying to buy textbooks for University, and like all the other books, the calculus one is pricey. The newest Early Transcendentals 7th edition by James Steward is required, but it would save me a lot to buy the 6th edition. I compared the index of the two, and it seems the 7th has a little minor addition than the 6th. I want to know if there are more differences inside the two books, like the examples and questions.

Your help is much appreciated! How different are the 7th and 6th edition of Early Transcendentals textbook by James Steward?
    Hello,

I go to the University of Toronto and I used Stewart's 6th edition book for first year calculus (MAT135). I have seen the 6th and 7th edition and it seems that the topics covered are essentially the same. The 7th edition contains some new problems. I would recommend buying the 6th edition and looking over a friends 7th edition from time to time if you want to see the new problems.

Like a drawing 101 book. There are a lot of them out there at the library that you would not even have to buy if you wanted to. What is the latest edition of the Canadian Securities Course Textbook?

I'm planning on registering for the course in the next couple days but was planning on buying some used textbooks for it. The girl I'm buying them from got them brand new in October 2010. Would they still be the latest edition? And do the editions change much from year to year? What is the latest edition of the Canadian Securities Course Textbook?
Hi there...I work with CSI and I can help you with your question. We update or revise the CSC annually. In 2010, we launched our update in August. If you're buying textbooks second hand...and the person you're buying them from enrolled in October 2010 and purchased textbooks from CSI with her enrollment, the textbooks will be valid for the current version of the course. We're planning another update in August 2011. Your textbook will still be valid, however we'll provide a PDF of any examinable changes to content in your e-Learning course materials that accompany your enrollment.

Be sure use all the texbook and e-Learning study materials in the course that come with your enrollment. Also be sure to check the Discussion Boards to touch base with our Learning Support service which is also included with your enrolment. Our team of financial professionals will be able to answer any questions you have about the course.

Thanks for enrolling in the CSC...and good luck with your studies.

What textbook would you reccomend to learn to speak and understand the japanese language best?

I'm looking for a useful way to learn japanese (speak and understand). I want something that translates phrases but also describes the words in it and how to put them together. I've already used the EuroTalk program, so I'm already at a beginner+ level. What textbook would you reccomend to learn to speak and understand the japanese language best?
The best way to learn Japanese is through a variety of methods. You need to work on your grammar, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Its best to think of these as separate categories and focus on each specific category as these require different methods and techniques.

Start by learning the basics through grammar. These books really helped me.

? Japanese Demystified by Eriko Sato a self-teaching guide

I also recommend trying to learn a certain amount of vocab or kanji each day as this helps you build up your vocab and kanji ability. I tried to learn 5 kanji per day or about 20 a week and did the same with vocab.

Watching Japanese anime or any Japanese TV program is a good idea for improving your listening skills and also your vocabulary. Keep a notebook and jot down any new words you hear. Then look them up and find out the meaning.

    How to Learn Japanese

http://japan-australia.blogspot.com/2010…What textbook would you reccomend to learn to speak and understand the japanese language best?
    Hello Patricia!

First, let me tell you: Stay FAR away form traditional educational textbooks or materials. You know, the ones that require you to memorize grammar rules, loose vocabulary words, and drill kanji stroke orders mindlessly. They DON'T work for actually becoming fluent in Japanese. Here, check out this resource:

    http://ezinearticles.com/?Learning-Japan…

Read the article and follow the resources at the bottom. Read them too, get all the materials you need (which are actually very few), and apply those methods with a passion!

Through immersion is how you can actually get to become fluent in Japanese and any other language. Thus, immerse yourself in Japanese!! :DWhat textbook would you reccomend to learn to speak and understand the japanese language best?
Its good to have a good study place, the best way to learn is online on these websites for the following reasons

    http://www.123japanese.com

    - Teaches full Japanese lesson free

    - Polite, Casual and slang Japanese (all Japanese)

    - Fully explains lessons

    - Teaches kanji and kana aswell

They also have a youtube channel

    http://www.youtube.com/123japanesecom

    http://www.japanesepod101.com

    - Has many lessons

    - unfortunately not free, you only get 1 week free trial (but just keep signing up with fake email)

    - Teaches polite and casual Japanese

    http://www.maggisensei.com

    - It teaches random lessons

    - Detailed lessons on wide variety of topics

    - Casual and polite Japanese

    What to stay away from.

    - books. : books only teach polite Japanese and usually have general translations rather than explanations. Polite Japanese isn't even used in casual speach, and books don't have a lot of information.

    - Websites with not a lot of explanations: when learning a language, its easyer if you get a good detailed explanation on the translation of something because a lot of times, something can't be directly translated.

Is it considered proper procedure to cite a textbook in a scientific paper?

I was once long ago told that citing textbooks is a no-go, but I'm not sure why that would be the case.

What about if its for a wikipedia article? Is it considered proper procedure to cite a textbook in a scientific paper?
For a wiki, article sure (low caliber). The reason textbooks are usually as no-no, is that for a scientific article they prefer the the actual research (from the journals) AND textbooks outdate fast. Textbooks generally present general knowledge that one is being taught to know, not a cutting edge scientific principle-for that journals are the source. Is it considered proper procedure to cite a textbook in a scientific paper?
If a text book has been produced in several editions (such as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc) it is considered more reliable- it was good enough to warrant another edition when new info had been discovered. For example, i'm sure Grays Anatomy would be a good book to reference to because it has been produced so many times over many years.

Wikipedia isn't generally reliable because just about anyone can edit it, but is you go to the references at the bottom of the pages and go to the original source, you have a better chance of getting a good source.

Lots of highly academic sources are now available on the internet so you shouldn't have to resort to wikipedia for your referencing. Basically you just need to find the most reliable sources out there.

Edit: in that case I don't see why not. Textbooks are usually pretty good. They have to be to get published in the first place.

How come people say that the universe is not expanding but my gr9 science textbook said it is?

i think my textbook said the universe is expanding at 1000000000000 lightyr/second

im CONFUSEDHow come people say that the universe is not expanding but my gr9 science textbook said it is?
    The universe is expanding

Imagine a balloon, in the beginning it isn't inflated. Yet after the big bang it starts to get bigger and bigger. As a matter of fact the expansion of the universe is accelerating because of dark matter.

But the universe doesn't have an edge because it's not the inside of the balloon, it's the surface of it. It gets bigger yet it always comes around to itself.

the best estimate for it's expansion is 70.8 (km/sec)/Mpc (give or take 1.6 (km/sec)/Mpc). A Megaparsec (Mpc) which is equal to 3.26 million light years or 30,800,000,000,000,000,000 km
My science teacher said it's constantly expanding and contracting as well. How come people say that the universe is not expanding but my gr9 science textbook said it is?
The universe is expanding according to the Big Bang theory, which is the one usually taught in textbooks. There are other ones too, which some people believe.
The Universe is definitely expanding, that's inarguable. The thing that people don't know for sure is whether the Universe is finite or infinite - that is, whether some day it will stop expanding or whether it will continue to expand for eternity. How come people say that the universe is not expanding but my gr9 science textbook said it is?
Because they are stupid and I even heard on the discovery channel that the milky way galaxy and some other galaxy are moving away from each other.
All evidence shows it is. Everything we see from the Hubble telescope, with rare exception, has a longer wavelength, due to the Doppler effect. That means that everything is moving away from everything, because 'space itself' is expanding.

The color of the incoming light is more 'reddish' due to the longer wavelength (This is called Red Shift)
we don't know haw big it is, we can only see what is there, it might be expanding, or it's not as big as they Claim.
They are all guessing. The reason so many believe it is expanding, is because us humans keep finding more space. Also it seems the most logical to the nature of our Universe considering all other realistic theories.
they've proved it is expanding, all the time our solar system is mving apart from the rest. think of it as dots on a balloon, as you blow up th balloon, those dots will get bigger and become further apart. the expanding universe works on the same princaples
textbooks also tell us about how we are causing global warming which isnt true so im not sure

it is only only true if the big bang theory is so it might be or might not
These are basically generally accepted theories, but just theories. At one time the world being round was only a theory, most finally began to accept it but there were still those that doubted it for many years after magellan circumnavigated it.
You are right the universe is constantly expanding and contracting.

Why some people say it is not. They might be bound by religious beliefs, or they may have never picked up a book that gave them them the concept.

You would be surprised there are allot of people in this world with allot of ideas that are not based on any fact at all.

Study Physics if you can. It will chang the way you look at life and the world around you. It did for me.
It's not expanding at any *speed* at all. The rate of expansion is a speed per distance--- the farther away an object is, the faster it recedes from us. The rate of expansion was very accurately measured by the WMAP experiment to be 71 kilometers per second, per Megaparsec. Read more about it here: http://www.astronomy.com/asy/default.asp鈥?/a>
it is expanding i haven't heard anyone say otherwise
It is a matter of education, or lack thereof in this case. People used to believe the Earth was flat and if you sailed far enough, you would fall off the edge. On maps, this unknown edge was labeled simply, "Here there be dragons." In the universe, we have the same thing, an unknown edge of sorts. We know certain things about the stars. One thing we know is about the Doppler effect. The Doppler effect is the classic train whistle, which when the train is rapidly approaching is apparently pitched higher than when the train has past and is moving away. Light, as with sound, bunches up as a star approaches (higher pitch), and spreads out as it recedes (lower pitch), just as the sound from the whistle does. The approaching star tends to shift towards blue, and the receding star shifts toward red. More stars are showing a red shift than a blue shift which that from our point of view, more stars are receding from us than approaching toward us, which tends to point to an expanding universe. Just remember, somewhere out there in space, at a way far away place, there is STILL a label, "Here there be dragons" marking the edge of the unknown from the known...
The universe is constantly expanding and contracting. This is clear on our planet almost everywhere. Take for example; volcanoes. Volcanoes erupt spewing lava. This lava in turn forms new land. Lava is formed from land. There is a repetitive cycle whereby land becomes lava and lava becomes land. On a universal scale, I could only speculate.
Can you tell us exactly what words your textbook uses? The universe is certainly expanding - - but not at 1,000,000,000,000 lightyr / second!

Every million years, all the really big distances in the universe stretch by 0.007%. The farthest things that we can see are now at a distance of about 46 billion light years.

46 billion light years x 0.007% / million years = 322 light years per year = 100,000,000 kilometers per second.
It is expanding, but the way in which it is expanding is controversial in science since some believe it is due to dark matter that it is expanding which is basically forcing it outwards while others believe it is dark energy which doing the opposite, instead of pushing it is pulling, and the evidence that supports this is the new fact that our universe is accelerating instead of slowing down.
The universe is expanding. People who say it don't know what they're talking about. Read This:
no one really knows anything about the universe

they hardly know anything about the moon

    there just all scientific guesses

I am writing a journal for class about the short story, The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin. i want to use a quote in it but am not sure how to cite it within the essay. Do i put (Chopin [pg #]) or use the textbook info. please help. thanks! How do i cite a quote in a story that's in a textbook?
At the end of the paper you should have a reference page that list all the sources you used. there you list the author, name of the book, year published etc. in the paper itself you can just use her last name and page numberHow do i cite a quote in a story that's in a textbook?
yeah you write like this, "quote" (#)

you could only use the page number if yr only writing about Chopin. If you're including other quotes by other books then you write (Chopin pg#)

How do most people study a textbook?

I am not a fan of reading textbooks in the first place but what works for most of you? How is it you gain the knowledge? Highlight? Outline? Give me some tips please. How do most people study a textbook?
    Hello,

I belive that would be an ecumenical matter. How do most people study a textbook?
I've found that the best way is to read a section over once. Then skim over it again and take notes of the important details. That way you can reference them later. Also, DO NOT read out loud to yourself, it is very distracting.

    Hope this helps!

Do you think I can finish reading a 500-600 textbook in 5 days?

  • Why does the government allow school textbook companies to rape us with prices?

I just purchased two textbooks for 300 dollars and was totally abused. Why does the government allow this? We are supposed to live in a free enterprise society. Companies are supposed to compete for the consumers benefit. What benefit do we have in paying such ridiculous prices for textbooks? Is this government also making some of this money? Do they make the textbooks? Why does the government allow school textbook companies to rape us with prices?
I dont know, but it is rape, without question
Yes it's outrageous. The textbook companies have a monopoly. But like you say, free enterprise, the govt doesn't intervene. More like the schools are getting some kind of benefit for recommending those books. Why does the government allow school textbook companies to rape us with prices?
No just go on amazon, ebay or some other site if you can from now on, it is ridiculous and it probably does need to not be a monopoly cause book prices rise every year....you'd think they'd be included if you pay for college especially..but whatever...just dont' buy your books directly from your school or from the books website they give you, just buy them used or something else, you should have a choice, as long as it's in good condition and has all the pages still....i wouldn't dare pay 150.00 for a book, i'd barely pay that for a really nice business suit, let alone a book i only need for a few months
Because they ARE making some of the money. They will raise prices for everything juse because the govt wants money.

Why do you think marijuana isnt legal? Because its dangerous, or unhealthy? No. Because none of the money goes to the government. Why does the government allow school textbook companies to rape us with prices?
Because the colleges have Americans by the balls. Its the new aristocracy... and people are buying into it.
In college, the instructors and the school get to select which textbooks they will use. Government has no say-so in this. Writers of the book realize they may only have their books used for one year or not at all, so price them accordingly.
What, no kiss first. You could go to cheap books dot com. Many kids at the local school use it.

Anybody have pointers on how to read chapters of a textbook?

So I've always had problems reading chapters of a textbook because when I'm done i have no idea what i read because nothing stuck.

Does anybody have good pointers on how to learn and know the information of a textbook. I've done the highlighter thing (doesn't work!!) I've taken my own notes by hand writing it but it takes forever!! I've also tried it on the computer but it doesn't seem to work either.

any ideas or anything you've tried will help, I'm willing to try anything at this point!

thanks so much!Anybody have pointers on how to read chapters of a textbook?
Read slower perhaps. Sometimes I have to read a text a couple of times until it finally sinks in. You could also try reading out loud. I know that helps some people.

Try and look for the thesis and highlight what you think realllllly stands out. I know some ppl who just highlight everything and..well..that certainly defeats the purpose.Anybody have pointers on how to read chapters of a textbook?
Make a movie in your mind. If it's something like history that you're reading, as you read, then picture everything that the book is talking about as you read it. Add some funny things if you want, to help you remember. Add background music if you want! Pretending like it's a movie you watched might help you remember it better.

If it's something more boring, like science, try to at least make it like an educational video. Picture all the little atoms moving around and things fusing and whatnot. Make your favorite celebrity the narrator. Draw pictures as you read to help you remember how things work.

  • What's the difference between textbook publication years?

I'm looking for college textbooks online. For one book I can find the correct edition number, but the publication year and ISBN are different. What's the difference here or would it be alright to use a book with a different publication year/ISBN so long as the edition is right? What's the difference between textbook publication years?
Well, sometimes textbooks are reprinted for various reasons, and sometimes ISBN numbers are different for a reason! If you college professor wants you to buy a textbook with a certain ISBN number, sometimes it's best to either get that exact ISBN number, or, speak to your college professor. What's the difference between textbook publication years?
Normally, they may have different page numbers and some corrections. I would ask your instructor if you could use an older addition. I would also suggest using GreenTextbooks.org

Yes you should be able to use the different publication year without problem. Yes. Old edition or new edition is that matters not the year of publication.

How can I take good notes from textbook (but not too many)?

For a summer assignment, we have to read a chapter out of the textbook for next year and take notes on it. There will be a 100 question multiple choice test the first day of school, and from what I've heard, it is pretty challenging. Usually I take far too many notes, in fear of encountering a very very specific question on the test/quiz, and not knowing the answer because of having ignored it when taking notes because it seemed like such a small detail. Thank you so so so much! How can I take good notes from textbook (but not too many)?
While reading your text, break each section up into key ideas/themes. With each key idea/theme look at how much detail the author goes into. If something only has two or three lines written about it, it is kind of minor; however, if an entire paragraph or two are written, it is a huge concept and will undoubtedly show up on a test! Now, take notes over this information and then once your done taking all of your notes, go through them and ask yourself questions... those questions should be written on index cards- question on one side, answer on the other. Now you have flashcards. Now it's just traditional rote learning and memorization. When the test comes up, you'll do very well.

Is it wrong that my Biology Textbook has a paragraph about God?

In the "origin of life on Earth" section, my biology textbook says that science does not concern itself with investigating the supernatural, so God cannot be proven or disproven by science. Is this a violation of the separation of church and schoolsIs it wrong that my Biology Textbook has a paragraph about God?
It's correct, and it's not violating the separation of church and schools. It is enforcing it.
No, it's a violation of God. There should at least be a chapter covering Intelligent Design.

I think it requires far more "blind faith" to believe in an unseen, unknown, unprovable, hidden in the mists of time "singularity" that possibly existed before time and before all other existence, and possibly similar to a black hole that remains inexplicable. Then, with out probable cause and possibly by spontaneous ignition, the compressed Singularity explodes causing the Big Bang. Then from the contents of the former singularity the entire Cosmos is created. Over much time, possibly millions or even billions of years, non-living matter somehow (?) becomes alive and forms microscopic organisms which begin to evolve into more complex organisms and eventually develop into the vast complexity and variety of living forms today. All the while defying the law of irreducibility, the 2nd law of thermodynamics and they also manage to do this without leaving any fossil evidence.

Micro-evolution is an observable fact, however it does not prove or confirm macro-evolution.

Scientists and evolutionists who blindly believe in the theory of Evolution ignore the lack of fossil evidence that is necessary to prove its original hypothesis and the observable fact that no living form has ever been able to transform into a different type of life form, i.e. viruses mutate but they remain viruses, cats and dogs become different breeds but remain cats and dogs, apes and man evolve according to the conditions we live in but remain apes and mankind.

Evolution requires a great deal more of "blind faith" than believing in the Creator God. However, even if hypothetically there was no God, then that would still not make macro-evolution a plausible theory. Is it wrong that my Biology Textbook has a paragraph about God?
If it weren't for the overwhelming belief in God around the world, I'd say it would be inappropriate. But given that so many people believe in it, that disclaimer seems warranted to me.
it seems to be an indifferent attitude towards an attempt to answer obvious questions by children with faith. i believe it is the most common answer from officials. and would prob be he most mature answer agreed upon by both christian/atheist parents and christian/atheist teachers. Is it wrong that my Biology Textbook has a paragraph about God?
The statement is kinda right, but mentioning God at all is a bit....too much? I dunno what's the word. They just shouldn't have mentioned God in the first place.
    No, it's correct.
If it's in a public school, yes. Violation of separation of church and state.
ur not supposed to mention God in scientific texts i think...

How to make a textbook cover from a brown paper grocery sack?

My 5th grader needs to have all of her textbooks covered and I remember doing that when I was in school using a brown paper grocery sack but for the life of me I don't remember how it's done. Does anyone have a easy how-to of doing it? Thanks in advance and happy school year! How to make a textbook cover from a brown paper grocery sack?
Here is a link I hope this helps!
They don't last well...Walmart sells excellent fabric, stretchy covers for under $1 each. How to make a textbook cover from a brown paper grocery sack?
lay the open textbook on the grocery bag. Cut a rectangle several inches larger than the open textbook. Next, cut in a straight line from the corner of the book to the edge of the paper (should be like cutting a square out of each corner. Also, cut straight up from either side of the binding and across the edge to remove a thin strip top and bottom. Fold the 3 "flaps" into the inside of each cover and tape well.

Another thing that works well (and is more durable than grocery bags) is the thin vinyl used for cheap picnic tablecloths. Especially the kind with the soft backing.
Cut the bag so it lies flat(down one of the creases and cut the bottom off)and lay it horizontally in front of you.

Then measure the book on the bag and fold the top and bottom of the bag to the dementions of the book.

then fold the extra over the inside covers and tape the top and bottom of the bag(to each other, not to the book).

It usually is best if you put the plain side on the outside of the book because then you can draw on it, or write the name of the class on the outside! How to make a textbook cover from a brown paper grocery sack?
By the time you read this I know you'll already have it done so I won't elaborate. Brings back good memories.
The new "cool" thing are fabric book covers... Some places charge as much as $5 for them, but you can find them in discount stores for as little as $1/ea.

As for grocery sack covers, imagine the bag sitting up-right. Cut down one long corner from top to bottom. Cut off the rectangle that makes the bottom of the bag. You now have one jumbo rectangle. Hold it so that it is horizontal ("landscape" way if you are familiar with printer settings). Fold the top and the bottom so that is the height of the book. Lay the book on top of the whole thing and fold the excess (which should be to the left and right) inwards into the inside of the bookcover. You have two options here, tape it as is or you can tuck the cover into the pocket that should have formed from the top and bottom folds.

    Just my views.

I own 3 molecular cell biology texts: Becker's, Lodish's, and Cooper's. Of those 3, Becker's is the best one for learning molecular cell biology.

"The World of the Cell: 7th Edition", by Wayne Becker.

    http://www.amazon.com/World-Cell-7th-Way鈥?/a>

I do not own Albert's text, but the graphics I have seen from it (there is a CD for sale at Amazon that you can see some of the graphics) are crude, and better are the graphics in Becker's.

Becker's book does not have as high of a rating at Amaxon as Alberts, so if you go just by ratings, then Albert's is the way to go.

But I don't know about the Amazon reviewers that rated Becker's a 1, saying things like it was was a bunch of disorganized facts and/or that they could not follow the material in it. Those people are in sad shape since Becker's book explains things much better than either Cooper's or Lodish's: and if someone can't follow Becker's, they had better just give up on cell biology.

NOTE: If you join the Scientific American Book Club, you can get BOTH Becker's AND Cooper's molecular cell biology texts - and one other book of your choice - for something like $10, with a minimal obligation thereafter. Can you recommend me a good Cell Biology or Molecular Biology textbook?
The best text is Molecular Biology of the Cell by Bruce Alberts et. al. You will use this book throughout college. Good graphics and images to help you understand molecular biology. Can you recommend me a good Cell Biology or Molecular Biology textbook?

What is the best textbook on evolution?

I went to Amazon to look for a good textbook, but I couldn't find one that addresses discussions of evo-devo and the importance in evolution of mechanisms such as mutations in regulatory regions of proteins, gene duplication and divergence, and the modularity of protein structure and how exon shuffling can instantly produce new proteins with new functions. These genetic mechanisms are much more important in evolution than mutations in the structural regions of proteins, which tend to be highly conserved even at the phylogenetic level. Any help in these specific areas is greatly appreciated. What is the best textbook on evolution?
It's not a textbook, but Sean Carroll's Endless Forms Most Beautiful is a great discussion of evo-devo and its importance.

The answer from zeal4him is particularly amusing given that the book that easi recommends, Richard Dawkins's The Greatest Show On Earth, specifically points out that Denton retracted his anti-evolution stance in his second book, Nature's Destiny, and that for some reason creationists never cite that one. What is the best textbook on evolution?
Its called The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins. What is the best textbook on evolution?
Because evolution has no mechanisms. How about Evolution: A Theory in Crisis, by Michael Denton?

If it's not used as a textbook, it should be.
Try searching for evolution related keywords in the textbook search engine http://www.bigwords.com and see what comes up.

Is answering an assignment's questions using the class textbook considered plagiarism?

    My question is simple.

My professor gave us an a simple assignment (few questions), and all the answers are found in the textbook and his slides.

Note: this is a grad class

Now, if I used these answers directly, would this be considered plagiarism? Is answering an assignment's questions using the class textbook considered plagiarism?
As long as you cite the source, give credit to it (book/author), you should be fine.Is answering an assignment's questions using the class textbook considered plagiarism?
You're asking this question as a -graduate- student!?!?

Do yourself a favor, save some tuition money and a good deal of embarrassment and drop out now. If you can't complete a simple assignment without plagiarizing from the text, you clearly have no business in a graduate program.

today the artist frequently uses power and pneumatic tools for the cutting, carving, sanding, polishing. Earlier artists used hand made tools, then machine crafted hand tools, and a lot of hard labor. There are any number of good books on the subject of sculpting in stone, or stonecarving. Look on Amazon.com, or on Barnes%26amp;Noble sites. Also, you can go to used textbook sites to get something inexpensive to start. If you want to see how someone does it but do not know of any local stone sculptors, call a Monument maker (yellow pages) who makes headstones for cemetaries. Ask if you can come observe as you have an interest in the craft of stonecarving. Wear old clothes, take some safety glasses if you can buy some (about $6.00 at hardware stores or Walmart in the hardware section) Do not touch anything unless invited to do so, be polite and thank the person for their time. Often artists who are not yet making their way as artists will do this work to make a living while doing art too.

Have there ever been other feminists than radical feminists who do not fit the textbook definition?

or has the top always been radical with nothing in common with the textbook definition of feminism, using the true believers as usefull idiots for leverage in their movement ?Have there ever been other feminists than radical feminists who do not fit the textbook definition?
Radical feminism only started appearing in the 1990's with the "third" wave.

Many of the feminist who fought in the British movement , the first movement and the second movement here in America.

Stood for the basic need of equality, not the submission of men.

yes they have used true believers for leverage...even I have supported them with donations.

Edit: then I can agrue that true feminisim started in the 1500's.
Can you give us this textbook definition? Otherwise we cannot truly answer.Have there ever been other feminists than radical feminists who do not fit the textbook definition?
Carole Gilligan, Simone de Beauvoir to name a few of thousands.
I think there is a little bit of feministic features in every woman, more in some in other though thats why we can show it. Those who do not show it and the ones who go along with the sterotypes of women are the ones who make it for us females to be labled as bitches or what not, becuase so many woman cannot stand up for anything.Have there ever been other feminists than radical feminists who do not fit the textbook definition?
The dictionary says that feminism is about equality, but that's like saying that prostitution is about love.

If they are honest, everyone knows the rot was there from the start. The only difference between the radicals and most of the rest is that the radicals were overtly crazy in their hatred of men (e.g. separatist communes etc) whereas many of the others simply (and obviously) disliked and distrusted men e.g. Greer, Oakley etc.

It makes me laugh when feminists claim to be for equality. If you judge people by their behaviour you will see that - at best - they do nothing to stop prejudice and discrimination against men e.g. there were no big feminist protests against the unfair VAWA (domestic violence) laws in the US. But just look at how feminists react to men who wanted a discussion forum on battered husbands: http://youtube.com/watch?v=qodygTkTUYM

Feminists are for equality? If only. There was a point in the late 1960s and early 70s when things could have been different, but the reasonable voices were drowned out by the misandrists, and that set the tone for the feminist movement and Western society up to the present day.
The textbook and dictionary definitions of feminism are way out. They would have us believe that it is about sweetness and light and reasonableness and that feminists have gently-perfumed farts.
The fringe of the movement never fits the textbook definition. It's like people who bomb abortion clinics in the name of saving lives.

Where can I get a full text copy of a first chapter of a textbook online?

I ordered the textbook a few weeks ago, but have still not received it in the mail. I have an assignment due in two days and need to read the first chapter by then to write a short discussion paper. I have looked just about everywhere online, but cannot find a full text copy of the first chapter. I;ve tried all of the search engines, as well as sparknotes.com, cliffnotes.com, and a great deal of "free online library sites." The book is "Literacy: A Critical Sourcebook" by Ellen Cushman et. al. Any help would be appreciated!Where can I get a full text copy of a first chapter of a textbook online?
Many times the school's library will have a copy of the textbooks being used for coursework, either available for checkout or on reserve for use in the library only. Alternately, if there is a campus bookstore (assuming this is a college course), maybe you can read the first chapter in there. I doubt you'll be able to find the book online. Good luck!Where can I get a full text copy of a first chapter of a textbook online?
can you borrow the book from a friend or roomate?

I got the South Asian edition of a textbook when I ordered a US version?

I've asked the seller for a refund but the textbook has a warning, "This edition is for sale and distribution in India, Pakistan, etc.... Circulation outside this territory is illegal." What could possibly happen to the seller if he got caught?I got the South Asian edition of a textbook when I ordered a US version?
Nothing, this is a scare tactic by the publishing companies. The only difference is the book you have is not in color, is smaller and lighter. My wife always orders international editions because they are easier to cart around and take to class (and of course much cheaper usually)

Look around your class, you will notice lots of people have these.

Is it illegal or bad to view your textbook online?

I've just cracked a code to read my history textbook online instead of carrying it back and forth to school everyday. I don't know if I could be tracked down and if what I just did could be considered bad. Or, I am just being paranoid.

PS: I know I already posted the same question, but I put it on a different category. Is it illegal or bad to view your textbook online?
Since you actually have the textbook, it is fine. It would be a problem if you did this instead of buying something you were supposed to buy, but if you (or the school) paid for the book, they won't object to your also checking it out online. However, if the answers to homework or tests are also available that way, and you use that information, you could be in a whole lot of trouble for cheating.
If you are looking at the teacher's edition (with the answer key) you could get in trouble with your school. If you are looking at the student's version you shouldn't get in trouble with the school, but it is possible that you're violating the textbook's terms of use. I think schools often pay extra for their students to have online access, and if your school didn't pay for that then you could theoretically get in trouble for using it.

On a practical level, it is very unlikely that you would get in legal trouble. If they do notice you accessing the site, they'll probably just send you a letter demanding that you stop. It's just not worth the bad publicity or lawyer's fees to sue a high school kid for looking at a textbook website.

So, your risk is low, but it is there. I don't think this is morally bad, but it may go against some copyright laws, and there is a very small chance that you could get into legal trouble. Is it illegal or bad to view your textbook online?
First of all it is not illegal. There are many ways to view textbooks online either free or charged. So no worries you are just putting things in your head that cannot happen. And no your not going to be tracked for it because obsviously it is a guarantee free website. But sometimes it depends on the website though in which I will recommend for you to state the website or either research on it.
I do not know if they are free or not but you can download them at http://www.textbooktorrents.com and http://www.GreenTextbooks.comIs it illegal or bad to view your textbook online?
It's not bad at all. Don't worry yourself, and calm down. You will be ok.LOL
No its fine at least for me my teachers gave us the codes to all of our textbooks so it cant be that bad if the teachers tol me to do it
    Nope its just fine

What is a good college-level physics textbook?

I am taking an AP physics course in the fall and I want to do some recreational studying. If anybody knows a good textbook that concentrates on engineering physics that'd be great :)What is a good college-level physics textbook?
    For AP Physics C,

The classic - University Physics by Young and Freedman. A close second is Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday and Resnick. These two books are far and away the best for introductory calculus-based physics.

University Physics I think is slightly better (I have both) because of the much harder solved example problems. Halliday has some very challenging problems, but I think just the depth and sheer number of problems in University Physics gives it the edge. While both books cover the normal physics fare (common type problems - pulleys, discrete electric charges, 1D schrodinger) not only is university physics more thorough (over 1700 pages) it is also the book used at MIT. This graphic also supports my belief that Young and Freedman is the best out there.

Amazon or Ebay are common solutions. Online textbook exchanges are other possibilities. Moreover, their are often student run textbook exchanges on larger campuses. Where can I sell my college paper textbook?
The best place to sell your textbook will be at the prof's next class. Go the first day and try and sell it to one of the students there for, say $100 or even $125. They'll save money and you'll make some back. If your prof isn't teaching the same class again, you're really out of luck, unless you go to the prof's office hours and ask/demand why a spiral bound reader costs so much and try and sell it back to him/her!

Okay, I have exams soon. All my Science teacher said is that all units are going to be on it, so I have to study the WHOLE textbook (close to 600 pages) which is nearly impossible since everything is written in paragraphs, so I don't know what to learn, since there's a bunch of unnecessary stuff.

Anyone help? Tips? How do i study from a textbook?
You need a list of the units you need to cover and the important areas of each, look them up as you go on and make short notes of the key points to help you remember. Do some questions to help fix what you have learned and make sure you know each area. If you don't have a list, think carefully about what you have covered, if you have notes check back over them to remind you, then write them down, as you do you should remember more then go back over each area and then check you know how to answer questions without the text book after each unit. How do i study from a textbook?
one of the points of an exam is to discover how much of the WHOLE semester you actually learned. Semesters were 15 weeks long when I went to school and so you were asked to learn only 40 pages a week -- that's reasonable.

clearly, at this late date, the only thing you can do is to skim the parts you already know and learn the parts you don't know. How do i study from a textbook?

if its an open book exam/test, u r alowed to have a few notes inside the textbook. so as long as ur notes dont look like a mini essay, u shld b fine.
I would. Do it in pencil so you can go back %26amp; erase it if you're planning on selling the book. If not, you could use a highlighter. Anything that will help on the exam. I took one of my finals on Sunday %26amp; another tonight. I don't think I did all that great on either one so good luck~Should I write in my textbook for a final?
Never..if you are planning to sell the book for extra cash then you will have to sell it for less, which will suck if you've managed to keep it in good condition this far.

If you aren't going to sell it back to the school or to other students then go ahead and write in it..but i suggest you use post it notes.. start with page number and the line you you can locate it easier, and ake key notes...you'll keep the pages clean and you can offer the post it' as a bonus with the book when selling ;)

    Good luck on those finals..
well if you can use the book then go for itShould I write in my textbook for a final?
If it's allowed, why not. Don't do anything unethical though.

I used to work at the bookstore, and usually a little writing in the book didn't devalue it enough. Only if a cover or pages were missing, or it was in really bad shape would we devalue it. Maybe it's different for other stores.
Cheating never gains anything. I suppose you might get a better grade, but you didn't earn it 100%. If you don't care about that, then go for it. Remember...a Doctor that graduates with a C and a Doctor that graduates with an A are both doctors. Who would you want doing your surgery? Food for thought. Good luck on the exam.
Heck ya, That is how I made it through some of my classes. I would keep it simple, like something that may have been added by the teach. that wasn't in the book. Another good idea would be to jot down where stuff is in the book, like a category and page numbers. I never had problems selling the books back. The only thing they checked at my college was the outside condition. If that concerns you, write it in pencil and erase, or sell the book yourself to someone you know will need to take the class next year.
It depends on your conscience.....does cheating or not telling the truth bother you? Then there is the possibility of being caught with those notes...is it worth risking your reputation or academic career? I think you should pull an all nighter and study your a** off!

Yes master. I'll get right on that.
try using: fundamentals of physics 7e thats my intro physics book. if you want to go more in depth use: an introduction to thermal physics by Daniel Schroeder.Look up in a physics textbook how pressure effects the boiling point of water.?
If you do it yourself you might actually

    learn something useful.
A liquid in a high pressure environment has a higher boiling point than when the liquid is at atmospheric pressure. In other words, the boiling point of liquids varies with and depends upon the surrounding environmental pressure.

i don't think themoon has a strong enough pessur to fuse hydrogen and oxygen atoms to make water because it has a smaller gravitational pull also because it lacks oxygenLook up in a physics textbook how pressure effects the boiling point of water.?
Get a couple of text books - not just one. The very back section should have an alphabetical listing (index) of all the topics in the book. Try looking up "boiling point", "water" or "pressure". Each should have a little number next to it - (this is not the answer but the page number) - turn to that page - this is the hard bit... you will have to read through and try to find the answer hidden in the writing. Don't be negative or quit .....try to think of it as a Treasure Hunt with a reward.... Good Luck .

Seriously - Earth big, high gravity - pulls down air, puts force and pressure onto surface of oceans/seas.

Moon, smaller than Earth, lower gravity, less pull...no air no seas.......your teacher is pushing it

What is a good textbook for modern greek?

I want to learn modern greek, but I do not know which textbook to buy. If you know any books, like a special dictionary, I should get with the textbook please recommend them to me.

Note: I'm looking for a textBOOK, not rosetta stona or a language learning website. I want a book.

THANK YOU!!!What is a good textbook for modern greek?
I recently acquired Greek: An Essential Grammar of the Modern Language, which is very good so far. Decent Greek grammars for English speakers are few and far between, so grab it while you can. Publisher is Routledge, 2004, authors Holton, Mackridge, Philippaki-Warburton.

This book thankfully is not cluttered with all those superfluous breath marks which were given up officially in 1982, and that alone makes it worth the price.

If I rent a textbook, is the actual physical textbook sent to me, or am I renting it online?

Okay, I think I had the wrong idea about renting textbooks. I think I was under the impression that when you RENT a textbook, you're renting use of it online, BUT I just went to rent a book at a website, and it looks like the book is actually physically sent to me, and I use it for so many days, and then I ship it back. Can someone tell me which of these is correct? Thanks! If I rent a textbook, is the actual physical textbook sent to me, or am I renting it online?
Most textbook rental websites actually mail you the book. I have experience with TextbookStop.com (they were awesome), and they definitely mail it. Many eBooks can be rented directly from the specific textbook publisher's websites. If I rent a textbook, is the actual physical textbook sent to me, or am I renting it online?
It depends on the service. Chegg.com sends you the actual book.

I believe that CourseSmart.com lets you use it online.

  • If a 10 kg textbook and a 2 g piece of paper are dropped side by side, which will hit the ground first ?

If a 10 kg textbook and a 2 g piece of paper are dropped side by side, which will hit the ground first? How would this change if the paper were replaced with a 2 g rubber stopper? Explain. If a 10 kg textbook and a 2 g piece of paper are dropped side by side, which will hit the ground first ?
According to Galileo, who was supposed to have done this expt from the leaning tower of Pisa, all masses drop at the same rate!

He never did the expt but the idea was correct! (Newton showed this, later)

So, the book and paper SHOULD hit simultaneously BUT you need to take air resistance into account.

The paper will be badly affected and will "float" down like a leaf from a tree whereas the book will crash to earth.

Astronauts did this on the moon with a hammer and a feather and the two reached the lunar surface together - in a vacuum they would!

How to reference about an idea from someone within a textbook using chicago author date style?

I have had a look at the referencing guide but I still have questions. For example, lets say I wanted to talk about an idea from the text qualitative research methods, 3rd edition, Liamputtong, which refers to someone else within the text, how would i reference that? like (Daly 2007,p 140). It comes from page 44 of the textbook. How I would I reference that idea which i got from the text. and how would i cite that idea as an in-text citation? How to reference about an idea from someone within a textbook using chicago author date style?
