How is an image carved out of stone or cement and please refer me to a textbook?today the artist frequently uses power and pneumatic tools for the cutting, carving, sanding, polishing. Earlier artists used hand made tools, then machine crafted hand tools, and a lot of hard labor. There are any number of good books on the subject of sculpting in stone, or stonecarving. Look on Amazon.com, or on Barnes%26amp;Noble sites. Also, you can go to used textbook sites to get something inexpensive to start. If you want to see how someone does it but do not know of any local stone sculptors, call a Monument maker (yellow pages) who makes headstones for cemetaries. Ask if you can come observe as you have an interest in the craft of stonecarving. Wear old clothes, take some safety glasses if you can buy some (about $6.00 at hardware stores or Walmart in the hardware section) Do not touch anything unless invited to do so, be polite and thank the person for their time. Often artists who are not yet making their way as artists will do this work to make a living while doing art too.
