What is the textbook answer for the difference between a screw and a bolt?

I know that one needs a bolt and one does not but the answer is not convincing enough. I know screws go thru wood and not bolt but scews are not only used for wood and so I dont believe that answer to be totally correct also.What is the textbook answer for the difference between a screw and a bolt?
