How come people say that the universe is not expanding but my gr9 science textbook said it is?

i think my textbook said the universe is expanding at 1000000000000 lightyr/second

im CONFUSEDHow come people say that the universe is not expanding but my gr9 science textbook said it is?
The universe is expanding

Imagine a balloon, in the beginning it isn't inflated. Yet after the big bang it starts to get bigger and bigger. As a matter of fact the expansion of the universe is accelerating because of dark matter.

But the universe doesn't have an edge because it's not the inside of the balloon, it's the surface of it. It gets bigger yet it always comes around to itself.

the best estimate for it's expansion is 70.8 (km/sec)/Mpc (give or take 1.6 (km/sec)/Mpc). A Megaparsec (Mpc) which is equal to 3.26 million light years or 30,800,000,000,000,000,000 km
My science teacher said it's constantly expanding and contracting as well. How come people say that the universe is not expanding but my gr9 science textbook said it is?
The universe is expanding according to the Big Bang theory, which is the one usually taught in textbooks. There are other ones too, which some people believe.
The Universe is definitely expanding, that's inarguable. The thing that people don't know for sure is whether the Universe is finite or infinite - that is, whether some day it will stop expanding or whether it will continue to expand for eternity. How come people say that the universe is not expanding but my gr9 science textbook said it is?
Because they are stupid and I even heard on the discovery channel that the milky way galaxy and some other galaxy are moving away from each other.
All evidence shows it is. Everything we see from the Hubble telescope, with rare exception, has a longer wavelength, due to the Doppler effect. That means that everything is moving away from everything, because 'space itself' is expanding.

The color of the incoming light is more 'reddish' due to the longer wavelength (This is called Red Shift)
we don't know haw big it is, we can only see what is there, it might be expanding, or it's not as big as they Claim.
They are all guessing. The reason so many believe it is expanding, is because us humans keep finding more space. Also it seems the most logical to the nature of our Universe considering all other realistic theories.
they've proved it is expanding, all the time our solar system is mving apart from the rest. think of it as dots on a balloon, as you blow up th balloon, those dots will get bigger and become further apart. the expanding universe works on the same princaples
textbooks also tell us about how we are causing global warming which isnt true so im not sure

it is only only true if the big bang theory is so it might be or might not
These are basically generally accepted theories, but just theories. At one time the world being round was only a theory, most finally began to accept it but there were still those that doubted it for many years after magellan circumnavigated it.
You are right the universe is constantly expanding and contracting.

Why some people say it is not. They might be bound by religious beliefs, or they may have never picked up a book that gave them them the concept.

You would be surprised there are allot of people in this world with allot of ideas that are not based on any fact at all.

Study Physics if you can. It will chang the way you look at life and the world around you. It did for me.
It's not expanding at any *speed* at all. The rate of expansion is a speed per distance--- the farther away an object is, the faster it recedes from us. The rate of expansion was very accurately measured by the WMAP experiment to be 71 kilometers per second, per Megaparsec. Read more about it here: http://www.astronomy.com/asy/default.asp鈥?/a>
it is expanding i haven't heard anyone say otherwise
It is a matter of education, or lack thereof in this case. People used to believe the Earth was flat and if you sailed far enough, you would fall off the edge. On maps, this unknown edge was labeled simply, "Here there be dragons." In the universe, we have the same thing, an unknown edge of sorts. We know certain things about the stars. One thing we know is about the Doppler effect. The Doppler effect is the classic train whistle, which when the train is rapidly approaching is apparently pitched higher than when the train has past and is moving away. Light, as with sound, bunches up as a star approaches (higher pitch), and spreads out as it recedes (lower pitch), just as the sound from the whistle does. The approaching star tends to shift towards blue, and the receding star shifts toward red. More stars are showing a red shift than a blue shift which that from our point of view, more stars are receding from us than approaching toward us, which tends to point to an expanding universe. Just remember, somewhere out there in space, at a way far away place, there is STILL a label, "Here there be dragons" marking the edge of the unknown from the known...
The universe is constantly expanding and contracting. This is clear on our planet almost everywhere. Take for example; volcanoes. Volcanoes erupt spewing lava. This lava in turn forms new land. Lava is formed from land. There is a repetitive cycle whereby land becomes lava and lava becomes land. On a universal scale, I could only speculate.
Can you tell us exactly what words your textbook uses? The universe is certainly expanding - - but not at 1,000,000,000,000 lightyr / second!

Every million years, all the really big distances in the universe stretch by 0.007%. The farthest things that we can see are now at a distance of about 46 billion light years.

46 billion light years x 0.007% / million years = 322 light years per year = 100,000,000 kilometers per second.
It is expanding, but the way in which it is expanding is controversial in science since some believe it is due to dark matter that it is expanding which is basically forcing it outwards while others believe it is dark energy which doing the opposite, instead of pushing it is pulling, and the evidence that supports this is the new fact that our universe is accelerating instead of slowing down.
The universe is expanding. People who say it don't know what they're talking about. Read This:
no one really knows anything about the universe

they hardly know anything about the moon

there just all scientific guesses
