What is the best university technique for summarising each chapter in the prescribed textbook?

do you summarise it by highlighting, or in your own words - rewrite again (i find this really takes a lot of time)...or etc etc...my textbook is hell so thick..gimme the best alternative to summarise it please... thanks! What is the best university technique for summarising each chapter in the prescribed textbook?
The act of actually writing the information helps you to learn and retain it. Read and then highlight each paragraph by looking for the key points or key words and then looking for a few supporting facts.

Go back and create your study notes by writing this highlighted information in an outline or bulleted list (or other method) then create your own summary statement for each section.

Use a notebook or a laptop, whatever works for you. And ignore all of the sanctimonious folks here who want to preach to you....What is the best university technique for summarising each chapter in the prescribed textbook?
Yep college course work takes time and energy to understand. If you aren't willing to put forth the time and energy to learn it you are wasting your money on school. The best way to summarize a text book is in your own words. Albert Einstein said it best, "You never truly understand a subject until you can explain it to your grandmother." You should read the assigned reading then be able to summarize it for your grandmother. If you have to read it more than once then so be it. When I was in College my mother was part of my study system. I would do my reading then call her and tell her about it. If I could get her to understand it then I knew that I understood it. Summarizing should not be a way to avoid the reading it should be a way to make sure you have understood what you have read.
