I checked my university website and the prof says he 'requires' this book but it's the 7th edition that he requires. Is it worth paying 200$ for a newer edition of the book?Does the edition of a university textbook really matter?
It honestly depends on the book and on the professor.
You may just have to deal with a few added pages/rearranged chapters or different questions... Or you could have a practically different book all together. If the professors assigns that you do questions 1-20 for homework and they happened to change those questions around, you could get a LOT of answers wrong because of the difference in editions.
Before every semester, I always contact the professor to see how the book will be used and if a certain edition is absolutely necessary. They are the only ones who will know for sure.Does the edition of a university textbook really matter?
With many other subjects, most of the information should be the same that you can study from and you can easily figure out the differences in page number assignments or even chapter changes.
But with math books like calculus, changes in excercises can make a big difference if you have to turn in assignments, especially if it's 2 editions apart.Does the edition of a university textbook really matter?
Universities put out a new edition of their text books every year. Really it's just an upgrade of the years before. They add some new information but its basically the same thing. They only do this to get more money. I don't think its necessary to get the new edition. Hope that helps!
